Cockateil Acting strange

We have a cockateil who used to bite the heck out of us. He finally became friendly but not with me. Recently we switched his food because he was having weird episodes where he looked like he might die. Finally, when we switched his food, he became friendly all of the sudden. He loves everyone now no matter who! The difference in the food is that it no longer had dried fruit and seed mixes in it... Just plain food. Do you have any idea what might have happened?

Did you bring him to an avian veterinarian? I would be concerned.

Re: Cockateil Acting strange

Well.... My dad took the cockateil to the vet (It's a family pet) and he wouldn't tell me until my mom gets home. All he would tell me is that "He" is a "She". Oh and yes it went to an avian specialist

TTT

Hopefully Amiable Animals will check this thread out. She's pretty good with birds and may be able to offer advice.

Was she exhibiting any nesting behavior when she wasn't acting friendly?

Re: Cockateil Acting strange

Defintely a vet visit is in order when there is a sudden change in behavior. What do you mean by plain food? Cockatiels, like all parrots, need to have fresh foods daily, such a veggies and greens and sprouted seeds. They can eat bits of your own meals as long as they are healthy. For example, tonight we had chinese, so the parrots all had a bit of steamed cheicked with mixed veggies (no sauce for them).

Please do update with what the vet had to say. Hopefully it was someone who knew their stuff!

Re: Cockateil Acting strange

Yes the vet said there was some kind of bacteria in the stool sample. The cockateil was given antibiotics and is doing ok. It is nearly cured.
