Smile New to the forums

Hiya everyone. I've been visiting this forum for a few days now and you all seem so nice and since I may finally be able to get guinea pigs soon (If I can find space for a C&C cage), I decided to join. I'm so sorry if I posted this in the wrong section...Hehe I'm still finding my way around. Does anyone have any tips on where to put a cage? All I know is that it can't be near a heating vent or a window and cannot be on the floor. Any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

Re: New to the forums

You could put a c&c cage on a cart table. Don't forget about the other things that you're going to need also. Like timothy hay, bedding, fruit and veggies, water bottle and a house for them to hide in. Welcome to the forum. I hope you like it here.

Re: New to the forums

It's not that they can't be on the floor...it's just better if they aren't.

When the cage is on the floor and you go by the Pigs you appear as a predetor or a bird of prey. Swooping down on the pigs can startle and stress them.

Being on a more even level with them makes you appear more as part of the herd and not a threat.

Re: New to the forums

Mine is on the floor. My walls are slanted, so it saves space. It also works out better for floortime, that way Phoebe can hop back in her cage whenever she wants.

And she's pretty much gotten used to me walking around. If I approach the cage though, I let her hear my voice & move slowly. She usually stays put.

Re: New to the forums

Oh, I read that it may get drafty on the floor, but I guess the main reason I shouldn't put a cage on the floor is my cat. Everyone's afraid she'll try to stick her paw in the cage and attack the piggies. However, she's almost 16 and incredibly lazy so I don't think she'll even try, but better safe then sorry. I also have a dog, but I don't think she could get through the cage and she'll probably be afraid of the guinea pigs. Anyway, putting a cage on the floor is an option? Also, anymore ways to cat proof a cage besides putting a lid on it? (Already going to do that) Thanks for your help.

Re: New to the forums

As long and the floor isn't drafty it shouldn't be a problem. However if you buy extra cubes and raise the cage then you get all that great storage space underneath for food, hay and bedding.

A lid made from wire shelving is the best way to protect the pigs along with plenty of hidey houses. I don't think your cat will try to hurt the pigs...she may be curious but I doubt she'll try to hurt them. Just keep an eye on her. If she starts sticking her paw through the cubes is an aggresive manner you can always add some small chicken wire to the outside or double up on the cubes to keep her out.

My 3 cats (all avid hunters) take no notice of my GPs anymore. Each took their turn in the beginning prodding curiously at the pigs, decided that they weren't prey and now act a little frightened of them.

Re: New to the forums

Welcome to the forum!!

I have my pigs cage on the floor and it really is not the best option. I sleep on the top bunk of my bunkbed so I have to becareful not to make sudden movements otherwise it could scare them. I can't blame them really! I also find that since I don't have a lid on my cage my cat can get in there. I keep my bedroom door shut most of the time so that this does not happen. But to be honest, I think my cat is to scared of them.

Re: New to the forums

I just rescued my puppy( who is 6 months old from the spca ). She trys to go after my guinea pigs. My puppy even bite the side of the cage and my guinea pig Fudge bit the puppy on her lip. I guess it didn't hure her because she did yelp or anything. Both of my guinea cages are on tables, I had them like that since I got my guinea pigs. Also I read some where if you keep your guinea pig cage on the floor the vaccum will scare them and they can get stressed out from this.

Re: New to the forums

I have 2 cats. One is afriad of the pigs unless they are on my lap and the other loves the pigs. She thinks they are kittens When I have them out for floor time she grooms them and sleeps next to them and plays with them (all supervised of course)Sometimes she moves to quick for the piggies (especially my girls) and scares them, but she takes note and stays still and waits for them to apporach her again. My little boar loves her. He's all by himself until he's big enough to get neutered so he enjoys the company. He plays a little more agresively with her then the girls though.

The again this is the piggie who goes after my dustbuster when I clean his cage

Re: New to the forums

I think it depends on what type of cage you want to build. If you want a 2,3 or 4 level cage like some of us, the bottom level really has to be on the floor so that you can reach into the top level (but I am short so..) unless you want to use a slep ladder or something. If only making a single level, up off the floor would be good and easier to clean too and also saves from all that bending down.

Re: New to the forums

Hi Ginnymommy:

It is hard not to fall in love with those little faces isn't it? The longer you have them you will find other reasons to love them even more. As they get older their personalities will start to shine through and there will be times they will keep you in stitches and other times your heart will just melt when they respond to you in a certain way. I have 6 (just got 2 today) and each one is so different in their own special way. At times they can be a handful and cleaning up after them isn't much fun, but the rewards definitely are definitely worth it.

Good Luck and Enjoy!
