New here: Howdy!

Hello all,

I'm new here (as the title says). Although I know Squat about Piggys (I'm more into birds and barnyard fowl) I thought it would be a good idea to start learning a thing or two about these adorable, humble, sweet critters that we have. But don't worry, my sister is the piggy person, I didn't just buy them and start asking stuff now, i'm not like that. Now I did have a question for you experts on Pigs. Why aren't you supposed to breed them more than once a year? Sister tells me that you don't recommend it for health issues. What about them in the wild? They breed most definantly more than once a year. Just curious.

Thanks,
Robert

Re: New here: Howdy!

Hello and welcome!

We all consider that breeding is wrong - they shouldn't even be bred once a year. There are hundreds of shelters in america, canada and UK overflowing with unwanted guinea pigs that people have dumped. There is no reason to breed because you are adding to the overpopulation of guinea pigs. We feel that if you do want more guinea pigs, then go to a shelter and adopt some. Also, as you stated there are many health risks. You can accidently breed roans and end up with lethals

Re: New here: Howdy!

Thank You Piglet. Yes, i've seen the effects of over breeding, and it's not a pretty site. We live near a big auction, where HUNDREDS of sick and dying, pregnant and old, pigs are sold, for $0.25 a peice, only to go home to die, have babies, and sometimes live. It's so sad. My question was primarily if your reason for no breeding, was for other than over population, and
