I was browsing some Thai websites and came across some guinea pig forums. I never knew people there called them "Gasby". People on the board said "Gasby" are the long hair ones: Peruvians, Texels, Silkies. They were arguing that that Gasbies and short hair guinea pigs are different species! One of the sites I found even said the word "Cavy" came from the word "Cave", because cavies lived in caves. I was laughing so hard. One sad thing is that most of the sites I saw today were giving wrong care info. Some of them are breeders. Some even mentioned giving them cooked rice and corn. That's just so upsetting. If I have time, I'd love to translate GPC and Guinea Lynx sites into Thai language. |

Actually, I should have used this title "something stupid I came across today". Shouldn't have used the word "learned" because it didn't teach me anything other than people could be so ignorant. |

I think "cavy" comes from the latin "cavia" which was related to the Brazilian word "cabiai" - their word for capybara. I might be wrong, though. |

Yes, Cavy came from their Latin name "Cavia porcellus". I laughed so hard and almost fell of my chair when I read about the cave thing. Also the thing about long hair pigs being different species than the short hair ones. I can't believe some people can write something like that on their website without doing some research. I think my English is not that bad. Short hair pigs and long hair pigs are same specie, just different breed, right? I also found another funny article on Thai newspaper. They called guinea pigs "hamsters". Here's the link, you won't be able to read it but you'll see picture of the so-called "hamsters". Matichon Online Last edited by lissie; 10-28-09 at 12:56 am. Haha... Well I'm not calling my pigs "gasby". I really wonder why they call them that because there's a local name to call guinea pigs. They only call the short haired ones with the original local name and call the long haired ones "gasby". It's the most silly thing I've read about guinea pigs. |
