This morning I went to water the plants on my fire escape. I got a super surprise! A squirrel came and built a drey in an empty pot I have between two larger pots. At first I thought the tree had blown a twig down, but when I tried to remove it I saw a two little eyes glaring at me! Good thing it didn't lunge at me! I am beyond excited! I am so obsessed with squirrels, it isn't funny...I have squirrel salt and pepper shakers, a lamp, statues, books, paintings, cookie jars, stuffies, toys...well...you get the idea! This has totally made my day super rad! It made me so happy, I couldn't keep it to myself! Here's the bad news. The neighbors upstairs hate squirrels. They put poison out on their fire escape. They think squirrels attack people randomly and give them rabies and the plague. It did no good to tell them squirrels do not transmit rabies. Ugh. I used to have a bird feeder on the fire escape and the squirrels got into it. The guy upstairs actually came down the fire escape one day and took my bird feeder and left me a nasty note on my door. Can you believe it? Darn New Yorkers! I figure if he gets nasty again, I'll call the city. Squirrels are considered wildlife here. People are so awful. Anyhow, here's the drey! It's hard to see, but the little white spot is an eyeball staring at me!  BTW - here's what I do with the hay that is too small and kind of broken up that I don't want to give to my pigs. It's not in the picture, but I have a little container stuck in one of the pots. I put some of it in there. The sparrows come and take it to build their nests.       |

Oh wow, thats sounds like quite the surprise! I find squirrels rather interesting too, but I've never been lucky enough to have one so close to me! Its a nice picture, although I cant really see the squirrel!! |

Thats lovely  shame about your neighbour though I have 3 squirrels that visit the garden every day, we have a walnut tree and they have been rather busy of late, I can watch them for hours! |

When I lived in IL we had big trees and quite alot of squirrels. Even one with babies. They used to tease my dogs, mainly the german shepard. It was funny to watch. We don't have squirrels here in Az, as least not where I live. I miss them. Sorry about your neighbor. I have neighbors that shoot anything that goes in their yard, prairie dogs, coyotes, snakes. They make me so mad. So I know how you feel. I could go on a vent... but I won't ruin this thread but people make me so mad!! |
