I believe they run on tripple AAA batteries so when the battery dies, just slip more in and you've got a fast rolling Hamster.

You know Kipsie, I'm not for sure. I think because they zoom. In the commercial on their website, its goes "Your kids will want a Zhu Zhu pet because they Zhu Zhu ZOOOM!". So maybe that's why??

About the prices, here and on the Toysrus website, they are only $7.99 and everything(last time I checked), and I mean everything that was Zhu Zhu related was sold-out online. They are selling like hotcakes and are selling faster then Webkinz did when they first came out.
