A day of firsts for my piggies and me

I'm a new piggy owner. Here's the little adventure my boys and I had this evening.

My piggies, Chuck and Ned, had a big day today. I got them out for floor time, and while they were frolicking about (and routinely rushing to their hideys whenever I made a noise or a move), I did a whole cage clean. It was definitely due (~2 weeks), but the cel-sorb bedding does a fantastic job -- there was no urine odor whatsoever. I'll be switching to fleece soon as I don't think the stuff's very comfortable for them, but I'll still keep it around for litter box and floor time bedding.

On that note, I must brag that my piggies seem to have litter trained themselves for floor time. I put their hidey hut down in a box in one area, and a paper bag in another, both containing cel-sorb and hay. The boys keep all of their poop and pee in the bag/box. Such easy clean-up. Love them!

Anyway, after scrubbing the coroplast and rebedding, it was time for the boys to have their first nail trims. It went pretty well, considering I was holding/trimming myself, and they're both pretty fidgety guys. I did accidentally tweak a quick on poor Ned (but did not cut all the way through, so no blood). He let out a big yelp, which of course made me feel terrible. He then grudgingly let me do the rest of his nails -- good boy! No more super sharp cavy nails for awhile now.

The boys were adorable when I put them back in the cage. I moved everything around, and they wandered about like it was a brand new cage. Fascinating! I also made them a 'hay box' by cutting a large hole in the top of an old food box (think kleenex style). Hopefully this will keep the hay in one place with less waste. We'll see how it works out.

I know this stuff is incredibly routine for all of you, but it's new for me! Just wanted to share my 'triumphs.'

Re: A day of firsts for my piggies and me

That's so cool! I only got my guineas last weekend. I am setting up some floor time tomorrow and will stay very still on the sofa to watch them. Hopefully they'll venture out of their hiding house...!
