Just got an adult female into the rescue tonight. Was at the feed shop getting Oxbow and she was behind the counter in a, well, nasty dinky cage . I asked what was up with the guinea pig and they said she had been dropped off by a man who said "Get rid of it". They were going to take it to a pet shop because they didn't sell animals, didn't want to carry animals, etc. I said "Don't bother! I'm taking her with me." So she is in quarantine, scared out of her mind, cowering. She obviously has never seen a hidey, doesn't know what to do with it. The cage she was in was smaller than "My First Home" - maybe 1x1.5 if it was a C&C. The people working at the feed store said the man had told them he had kept her in it since they got her as a baby. No companion, Vit.C in the water, the list goes on and on..... The food was even caked into the bottom of the bowl (you know the kind - the neon fiesta cr*p) . <shakes head> Oh, the worst part?! (well, if this all wasn't horrible enough)... her bedding, if you can call it that, was newspaper that was soaked thru with urine and water and abour 1/2 inch of poo covering the bottom . So she obviously needs a bath, and her nails REALLY need trimmed (they are curly). I think I'm going to wait a couple of days though. She is so traumatized I think I would give her a heart attack if I tried to bathe and clip her. Obviously it's never been done. |

Oh... my... gosh. That is terrible! Bless you for taking her in! I hope you set up a nice quarantine cage for her and tossed out that piece of crap that she was in. Poor baby... Please keep us updated on her condition! |

She doesn't even know what to make of it all. She got the old "guinea pig diet" of iceburg and carrots - won't touch the good stuff yet. I will keep you all updated. Oh, I have named her Artemis, who is the goddess of animals. Will call her Missy for short. She needs a good strong name to get thru this without deep emotional scars. That actually made me cry...That is so awful but I'm so happy you took her in! I have a major soft spot for animals and stuff like this just makes me cry like a baby. I'm just so happy that she has a good home now. Well done to you. That was such a wonderful thing to do. |

I can't beleive it - first of all, the conditions the piggy was in. My chin hit the desk! Everything was horrible! Sencondly, what perfect timing! If you were not at the that store then, the poor cavy would've been taken to the pet store and been kept in the same conditions. And, if the idiot 'got rid of her' a day later, the same thing would've happened! Thank you soooooooo much for taking the poor baby in. Truely...God Bless you. = ) I'm not sure what the piggy was thinking when it got a clean, big new cage with lot's of hay, quality pellets, and a salad. You got even more coming piggy...that's just the quarintine cage!! Literally, that piggy went from piggy 'where the devil lives' to piggy super heaven!! Thanks soooo much again! = ) |

Poor baby. Good luck with the bath when that comes. I would definately give it a couple days. I hate seeing long nails and dirty piggies as they normally are very clean animals. I hope you can find a nice home for her and hopefully she can have a companion. She might not touch her veggies for a while. Sebastian cleans his veggie plate on occasion and he's been with me a month now. He'll eat his lettuce and cilantro, it'll probably take a while for her. Well, you already know that you have a rescue and this isn't your first picnic. |

Thank you for your kind words. I may need them. She is so horribly emotionally scarred from her life in hell, I stayed up all night loving on her and telling her silly stories about her soon to be roommates. I am really tired but she has a trust for me now, which is a good start because boy oh boy does she need a bath!!! She still won't even look at the hidey, so I took out one of my ferret hammocks (don't have ferrets but use them as "tents" in the corner or lay them on the floor for my piggies to lay on) and made a little hidey in a corner for her. She LOVES it, which means she isn't coming back out right now :P. Quote:
The best part of the night was when she kind of sighed and fell asleep. I knew she felt safe and it makes how sleep deprived I feel now so worth it. |

I understand. I just got off work this morning so I know about being sleepy, chances are that's why I didn't get it. It was a long two days. |

Well that just goes to show that some things are meant to be. And when they are, circumstances just have a way of lining themselves up to make it happen. You were meant to rescue that piggy from that situation. The owner dropped him off right before you were supposed to be there and you were there to see him and take him with you to a better situation. The story of Ollie, the pig I rescued, is a similar situation - right place/right time type of thing. |

SnowFlower, I'm glad to hear that you are keeping her! After reading her story and finding out that you have a rescue, I was hoping that she would become yours or like a sanctuary pig. I hope that once you give her a "spa day" that we all can see some pictures of Missy! I'm also happy to hear that she's already starting to bond with you. I can't wait to hear more about her progress! |

Update: Missy seems to have had a good, quiet day. She loves her ferret hammock hidey much better than the pigloo. She loved her bath too, especially the loves after. I was suprised such a traumatized piggy could trust me so soon after being in horrible conditions. I picked up a couple of special treats at a no-sell pet shop, to perk up the entire herd and welcome her especially. Thank you so much for all your kind words and encouragement. She is by far the worse off piggy I have ever had in my care and it is taking a huge toll on me emotionally. I am so grateful I chose that feed store over my usual one on that day. Not one to blow my own horn - but I feel she is truly in the best place she can be. I am a crazy Cavy momma and prepare garnished and arranged salads for them . Pigture of the coifed and mani-ed Missy to appear in my profile soon. |
