Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 While exploring the site, I noticed on the bottom that there are ads about cages made for cats. I had no idea that people actually keep their cats in cages, like guinea pigs or other small animals. Do you know anyone who actually does this? Perhaps I just misunderstood the ad? |

I've seen that ad to. Sometimes people put their cats in a cage when they're gone because there cat cause too much trouble when left alone. |

I would only put a cat in a cage if it was feral or a litter of feral kittens, that I was trying to rehabilitate or something. Couldn't imagine putting any of my cats in a cage though. I believe some cat breeders may put the kittens in cages too. |

I never kept my cat in a cage. Some people even put the outside in the cages, if the animal can't be trusted outside. |

When my mother and I visited a cat breeder they kept their males in cages. Really they were ferret sized cages and there were two male cats in each. they did this to keep them from breeding with the females. I thought it was cruel. They could have at least dedicated a whole room to them or something. We asked them about it, they said the cats stay in there till they want to breed with them or trade them. the females and neutered males were free range. (I don't buy from breeders personally, or promote it- no attacks please) |

I have 7 cats, all of which are indoor cats. I crate or "cage" my 5 younger cats at night or I would never be able to get any sleep. I have large breeder's crates, 2 crates with 2 cats each and 1 crate with one little boy who doesn't get along with anyone very well, particulary in close quarters. Cats are by nature denning animals and the crate offers security for them. Mine are happy to "go to bed" at night and often spend some of their day in the crates voluntarily (I leave the doors open during the day), even when they are out to have the run of the house. It is also handy when someone is leaving strange poops as I can isolate someone to determine who has the problem. I don't use it as punishment, although my one little boy doesn't mind a time out occasionally. It offers them security and helps to run a 7 cat household with some degree of peace. |

When our Cats were Kittens, we kept them in it at night. If we didn't they would claw everything and make big messes . |

hmm I haven't noticed that but I certainly would never keep a cat in a cage! My cat was never kept in one. She was allowed to roam outside too, and lived till the grand old age of 18! Died of natural causes. |

I have an outdoor enclosure for my 2 Savannahs. They can only go in it during weather appropriate days in the late spring, summer and early fall. |

This ad is up right now while I'm replying! I would never keep my cat in a cage (she would probably find a way out). |

Myspoiltpiggies, if mine were outside, they would die of natural causes too-mountain lion, lynx, coyote, fox, racoon, etc, etc, etc. 5p5g5- are not Savannahs the large, almost feral cats? I think that they're magnificent! |

They are bigger then most cats and are 50% wild. They are very rare and I was lucky to come upon 2 at a shelter. They love their outdoor enclosure and feel right at home in it. |

How exciting! At a shelter, no less! I had heard that they can cost $20,000 each. I would love to have a pair. OOOOOOHHHHHHH! I'm SO jealous! Really, I'm glad that they came to your home. I'm sure they will have a wonderful life with you. |

They hate the winter though. They just stare out the window. This winter there were some nice days where it was in the mid 60's and they gotta go out. |

Savannah cats are beautiful, but I wouldn't support buying one- I'm against keeping wild or near wild animals as pets. Why domesticate more animals as pets when we can't even control our already tame population (eg sugar gliders)? Not to mention the special care needs of many of these animals. I was listening to someone who bred the cats on the radio not long ago, and if I remember correctly these cats were really shy around people they didn't know and would hide. Not aimed at you 5guinea5pig5, it's great you could adopt them. |

Pixiestix, your points are well taken. The Audubon Society and many cat clubs advocate not letting your kitties outside. There are a lot more airborne illnesses, loose dogs, cars and just mean people than there used to be. You can also add raptors to the list of predators. Most cats with cages do not live in the cages and if they do, I agree, it is cruel. As for the Savannahs, I am passionate about cats and got carried away with their beauty. You are right in that we don't need to add to the pet animal population in such a manner, although I'm glad that these two went home with 5g5p5. They take a special person to deal with their special needs. |

I put my cats in our spare bathroom at night and when we leave the house otherwise they go buck wild and tear up everything. I have tried numerous times to leave them out to no avail. I made the bathroom nice and cozy with their beds and some toys along with their litter box. They do not mind it one bit and are out around 15+ hrs day (From the time I get up until I go to bed). They are so well behaved when I am around, I wish I could leave them out 24/7. |

They're very shy around new people. They're kind of like guinea pigs in a way that they like hiding a lot from people. I think the only reason they like me is because I do all their feeding |
