Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 I have a question for those of you with more than one cat. If I already have an 8-year old ragdoll cat, is he too old for us to get a kitten? I know 8 is fairly young concerning cats' long lifespans, but my mom said she thought he was 'too old' for a kitten...... Thanks in advance! |

I have had cats of various ages living together. It will just depend on your cat's personality. Cats may or may not want to play together. The kitten may or may not pester the older one. It is really hard to tell with cats. I do not think there is a problem bringing in a new kitten with an older cat. When we brought in a new kitten, our other cats were 10 and 11. They were absolutely fine with it, but like I said, it will just depend on your cat. |

I have introduced kittens to older cats, in fact it is often better to have a kitten with an older cat as the older one teaches the kitten how to behave better. As long as you introduce them properly they should be fine. But ir does depend on the personality of the cat you have and the kitten. Has the cat you have always been an only cat? |

Yes, Charlie has always been an only cat. But he wouldn't hurt a fly, literally. If my young 1.5 year old shih tzu Lexie chases him and corners him (this doesn't happen often), he won't even hiss or do anything that you would expect most cats to do. He did hiss a couple times when we first got Lexie, and those were the first and so far only times he has hissed. Unfortunately, before we became enlightened on the cruelities of declawing cats, we had Charlie's two front paws declawed. So, he can't hurt anything with his claws...Ragdolls aren't ever aggressive unless they're a ragdoll mix with some other breed of cat, if thats what you're concerned about, and Charlie is purebreed ragdoll. When I got my first guinea pig and set her down in front of Charlie on the floor, he went to sniff her, and she brrrrrr-ed a little, and he was startled L0L, he took a few quick steps back and stared at her like "Woahhh what the..." |

I have 11 cats (well actually 12 are in our house right now because my sister's cat is here) and some don't get along but they all tolerate each other. |

Taboo, I thought I was crazy with 7 (used to be 8). All of mine are indoor kitties and, no, they do not get along equally well but I never have any blood-just alot of hissing sometimes. As long as they have space to get away from each other when needed, they maintain a relatively calm status quo. If you get the opposite sex of your current cat, it would not spark as much, if any, territory problems and as you already have a boy, bringing a female in would be ok. It might be different if you brought a male to your female's territory. A younger cat can spark new life in the more mature kitty too. At any rate, get your pet a pet and enjoy them both. |

We have three and they are best buds, but they have been together since birth, never seperated, and sometimes they fight, but it's never bad. It really depends on the cat, sometimes they will get along but sometimes they won't. You need to introduce slowly. Sometimes it takes a long time and they may never get along. Sometimes they will just tolerate each other. If he is older it may be a little harder to introduce. We watched a friends cat for almost a week and I tried introducing them properly, but it never worked when they were together the new cat wanted to sniff them but our cats wouldn't have it. So they would just sit or lie there and hiss and growl, they never fought or anything. So I didn't try, since we weren't keeping her. I miss her though, she stayed in my room, and she slept on my chest or neck every night. Follow this. |
