Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 SO today, my dog went out for a walk with my parents. There's a dog down the road that had attacked my dog before so they took a wide birth. Their dog came around and started biting mine! She even crossed the road! I live right off a very busy roadso my dog could have easily run toward the road! Now, we checked her over and she has two bite punctures. They were bleeding and now my dog is terrified! We went down there and confronted the owners. I wouldn't have been as mad had the dog escaped but The dog is kept in by an electric fence. She doesn't even wear the collar. It's so well AGGRICATING! Well, anyway, when we confronted them they said," She's never been bad with dogs ever. She was always good around the dogs in the park!" " You didn't even hear it?" We heard something. We didn't think much of it though." But, they offered to pay for the vet bill should the need come. So now my dog has two wounds, we put some disinfectant on it, and gave her extra lovins. Sorry for the rant. I just can't beleive it! |

I would call animal control. Especially since the skin was broken, you want to make sure that the other dog is up to date with its vaccines. Also, next time could be so much worse. If you call now, hopefully animal control will have a talk with the owners and maybe prevent a much worse attack later. If the owners do not listen then you and your neighbors have a record to point back to. If you can't get thru to animal control, call the police to file a complaint (against the dog owner). Personally, I would take my dog to the vet to be safe. Puncture wounds are easily infected. It might make the owner think twice about letting their dog run free if they have to pay out for vet bills. I wish that laws were such that at the very least owners should be required to take their dogs to obediece class at the first offense. |

I double everything krittercrazy said. Definitely take her to the vet, and file a report. It's possible that there's already a report on this dog (no matter what the owners might say), and your report is all that's needed for some action to be taken to make sure that this dog is properly contained. |

How could your dog "have easily run toward the road" more than 4 feet if she's on a leash? Don't tell me your parents are super irresponsible. Your parents did notify the other dog's owners the first time that their dog was loose and had attacked your dog? Or did your family think "Oh, well, that dog is running loose and might get run over by a car at any moment, and seems aggressive towards other dogs and will probably get in a fight soon, but who cares, we'll just walk around that house and not bother talking to the owners"? You really should report it. The squeaky wheel gets the oil. If the dog isn't stopped and kills another dog next time, part of the blood is on your hands. People "let" their dogs do many things they shouldn't. How? Ignorance. Irrational thinking. Apathy. Etc. Definitely go to the vet, even if you don't think she needs it. What kind of disinfectant did you use? |

My mother let go of the leash so my dog could defend herself. We live on a road and then down the road is the busy place. The dogs house is like 30 feet from the road. It was the only thing she could do. Yes, the dog will be going to the vet. We do plan on filing the report ,too. Just regular disinfiectant. We cleared it with the vet. They gave her shots and shes on an antibiotic. She's sore but doing okay. The peoples dog have all her shots so it should be ok. She's going for another check up on tuesday. |

Just thought I’d add – I have had a similar issue. My dog Scout is a big girl, about 85 lbs, and though she is not an aggressive dog she isn’t a friendly dog either. She’s always on a harness and leash but about a year ago we got a neighbor who has a miniature pincher that they never felt compelled to put on a leash and would constantly run up to Scout and mock-attack her. She would always respond in kind and after several incidents and many failed attempts at speaking reasonably with them, we got a copy of the leash ordinance in our county and gave it to them. That didn’t do much good either and so finally my husband ended up telling them that their inability to keep their dog on a leash could get both of our dogs killed. Scout outweighs Rocco by a good 60 lbs – a true fight between them would not end well for Rocco. And any dog that attacks another (in our county) could possibly be seized and destroyed. It’s not likely, since we’d be in the “right” since our animal is the one on the leash, but it’s possible. It sounds like your parents have the situation under control, but if it continues - possibly if they can make the owners of the dog that attacked aware that their actions (or lack thereof) has far-reaching effects that could not only result in the harm of your dog (and others) but might result in them losing theirs, it could better motivate them to get their dog under control. |

I'm glad your dog is going to be ok and hoping that there won't be a next time. It is so aggrivating when you are being responsible but still can't go for a walk to exercise your dog because others believe that their dog can define their own boundries. |

I witnessed a ferocious attack- 2 pit bulls ganged up on my neighbor's dog. Her dog survived the attack but later died at the vet clinic due to complications from her wounds. It was sickening to watch. It was the middle of winter and there was ice on the sidewalks. My neighbor was using a broom to get the pit bulls off the dog but it wasn't working. I tried turning on my water hose but it was frozen so that plan didn't work either. The pits eventually ran off when 3 of us yelled at them with our makeshift weapons (a hose, broom, and tree branch.) We later found out that the pits attacked several other dogs before the police came and exterminated them. Two of the dogs died. I agree with what everyone else said. Definitely file a report! |

Paula: My friends had a dog aggressive Labrador. One day two little yappy dogs came over. It didn't end well. All the Lab did was step on one yorkie and BAM! I can't seem to remember what happened but my friends payed the vet bill and all is well. |

Hey if it wasn't your dog it could have been an innocent little kid being attacked. |

I'd suggest calling animal control. They can enforce the fact that the animals should be securley contained and have a collar. Does your town have leash laws? If they do, they could get fined. |

We called animal control and filed a report. We called the dogs owner and asked her what she was doing to keep the dog in the yard. The put her electric collar back on her and are supervising her when she goes out. I don't think that will last long though. |

I'm glad your pup is Ok. I don't know how the laws in your area are but where I live at even an electric fence is not considered legal containment. Any dog out in a yard not on a leash or behind a secure fence is subject to the leash law, and the owners will be fined. So if you see the dog out again I would just call animal control, especially if the collar is not on. Is there another direction you could walk your dog in? Not that you should be the one to make ammends, but for the safety of your dog maybe something to look into? |

Sadly, if we wanted to walk straight from my house (we live on a coldasac) we'd have to walk her striahgt past there. We have taken her for some hikes, but so far we haven't taken her for a walk. She just visited the vet. Everything is healing nicely so she should be fine. |

Oh good I'm glad to hear she's healing up great. Hopefully the neighbor's have fullfilled their end and payed for the vet checks. I would check the laws and see if containment is considered to be ok with an electric fence. In my area it is not, so you might be able to have animal control help you out more in getting them to control their dog. |

How would i check that? We have our dog on an electric fence...I don't think its illegal. My dog has never been shocked on it and she's 6 years old. I have seen people using quite terrible. I find them cruel however. I got it before I found this site though! |
