Good Quality D/F

I just came across this brand of Dog Food and never heard of it. I have a 9 week old Great Pyrenees and was wondering if this is a Good Product to feed him? It suppose to be for large breed puppies, and GP's are definitely that. I have idea what to look for in ingredients and they are listed for those of you more versed can go over. I have yet to buy it, wanted to make sure it's OK first.

Solid Gold is pretty good as far as dry pet food goes.

I don't think it is very good. I just read the ingrediants and it has: Thyme, Blueberries, Cranberries, Carrots, and Broccoli. I'm not sure, but I don't think dogs should have fruits and veggies.

This link is Chicken, but they have other flavors. It is a meat diet and it is healthy for dogs. It can be for any size puppies. They also have adult foods.

The ingredients look pretty good. I like that the first listed are meats. Do you know if the bison is muscle tissue or if it contains brain or spinal tissue? Other than that, I would be comfortable feeding it to my crew. Dogs do need some vegetable matter in their diets.

I know. That is why I said it's pretty good for dry pet food. Personally I don't recomend it, but it's way better then a lot of other brands. They shouldn't eat fruits, vegetables, or grains, but if you are going to feed dry food it's one of the better ones.

I believe that the Whole Dog Journal is the only source of info for confiriming the quality of a certain dog food. According to WDJ, all Solid Gold brand dog foods are approved. Its healthy for dogs to eat fruits, veggies, and grains. A wild dog left to her own assets would supposedly on her own eat a variety of plants, along with mostly meat. If you feed raw food, than those usually don't have fruits or veggies, or grains. Thats because the diet is naturally complete w/o added vitamins or minerals needed.

Grain free is a great idea though, thanks for mentioning it, because thats what I currently feed my dog and cat. For a large breed dog especially, I would suggest grain-free dog food, but you don't necessarily have to avoid fruits & veggies all-together, although they will be just as fine w/o them. Some grain free dry foods have them, some don't. Fresh veggies (little bite sized treat pieces) are probably better, like they are for piggies v. processed.

According to WDJ, if the dog food says "all life stages", then that is also safe to feed to growing puppies, any breed. Its basically the same as when it says "for growing, etc etc dogs" except w/ all life stages, you can still feed it to an adult dog, as long as they aren't overweight, or almost completely inactive(from some sort of condition, probably more likely if the dog is really old).

It's a decent dry food. The secret for knowing what dog foods are good or not, is to look at the top 5 or 6 ingredients. More meats in the top, the better. The Solid Gold you are looking at only has 2 or 3 meats in the top. So it's an OK food. There are a lot of foods out there that will have anywhere from 3-5 meats in the top. Also you don't want more then one meat meal in the top. Meat meal is a very poor source of protein and nutrients, but they still eat it naturally in the wild. But definitely stay away from all foods that contain grains. They offer almost nothing to your dog. And can cause a lot of health problems for your dog if they eat it too much for a majority of their life.

Just to prewarn you. The more meat that the company puts in the food, the more expensive. I've seen it get up to almost $30 for a 13 lb bag of dog food.

All life stage foods are ok to feed as well. Although it's not as good as if you got a food that is made only for one certain life stage. Puppies need different nutrients compared to an adult dog or an old dog. So, what they do is make it good enough for each stage of life but not quite exactly what they'll need.

Thanks for that! I wasn't sure if the whole no fruits or vegetables thing applied to dogs as well as cats (but I do know that cats should have absolutely no vegetables, fruits or grains, and it's a good idea to steer away from fish and beef [dogs should steer away from those to] since they are very hyperallergenic), but I know grain isn't a good idea. Now! Has a grain free dog food, though it is a bit pricey.

I just saw this. I can't remember if this is a brand that my dog forum recommends. I know I feed my dog (a black lab/chow mix girl) Canidae which is one of the better. But I'm thinking M&F is right that the first five ingriedents are the most important. The Whole Dog Journal is not the best source to find a dog food.
They do have some good foods on their list such as Evo, Innova, and Artemis, but some of the foods on the current list shouldn't be there.
Beowulf natural foods-back to basics chicken, Burns pet nutrition-brown rice and chicken, and Della Natura- wenaewe adult are just a few that should not have made that list.
