Re: Finding the right dogfood?

Okay, so when my 180 lb newfie was going through training the trainer talked to us one time and tod us all about goo dog foods. the top of the line foods where, Athority(I don't know if they have an organic kind in that brand though), Nutro, and Blue Buffalo. I use nutro and I used nutro with my other newfie and that say that it ehances coat, life span, and you will find 40% less poop in the yard, cause they absorb a lot of the good ingredients
I hope that this helped you!

Nutro and Authority are not top quality, I wouldn't feed them to any dog. I could go through ingredient by ingredient as to why. A dog trainer isn't a nutritionist and while its great they were trying to get your newfie on a better food they should have done some research as to what a better food was made of. I will say blue buffalo is a good food. The only good food that trainer recommended. I don't like the fact that it has oatmeal, rice, barley and millet (so several grain sources) but it also has several meat sources. I like the blue buffalo wilderness better than the organic formula.

Pixie, about senior foods, I rarely like to use them unless there is a medical reason that the dog needs a lower cal lower protein food like kidney issues where they need a lower residue type diet. If you feel your older dog needs something for movement or some dietary supplement then you can use probiotics to aid digestion (you can go with plain yogurt if your dogs tummy can tolerate it) and something like flexicose or cosequin to aid joint function and movement. As for why your dog fattened up Iams has 381 calories per cup and science diet has 365 calories per cup while Go! has a nice whopping 617 per cup. So thats where the weight came in. I do want to stress though that you do not need a low cal food. Just watch him and give him more exercise if he needs trimming down. if obesity becomes an issue then you can re-examine your food choice and look to find a suitable plan.

Nutro is a great food. My Newfie lived to be 12 yrs old when they are only suppose to get to 8-10 years old. It can have chicken or lamb meal(not bi products) and you also can get organic. Blue Buffalo is a good quality to. A dog trainer is the perfect person to go to cause vets just rip you off by trying you to buy a bad kind like science diet that makes your dog poop 24-7.

Re: Finding the right dogfood?

So after research and fuzzworth's wonderful advice! I am switching off of royal canine and to Blue Buffalo Wilderness!

BLUE Wilderness High Protein Healthy Dog Food

It took me forever to find it! But as it turns out, it's at my fiance's mom's health food and organic food store. YAY! I get a discount on it too.

That's great! I wish I could find Blue Buffalo somewhere else besides where we have to get it!

Re: Finding the right dogfood?

Fuzzworth- thanks. Yes, I was figuring the same thing about senior foods. His joints are fine, digestion good, etc, he just does not seem like an old dog. We're careful about not feeding him many calories by treats, and he does get his exercise. Thank you again!
