We have a baby!

Well, a baby chinchilla, that is. My vet called this morning and asked if I'd be willing to take in a rescue. One of his other clients brought in a chinchilla in bad shape, which they apparently didn't even know was pregnant. The chin had two babies, one born dead, and the one I've got now. The mom died shortly after birth.

So this little one is all alone in the world. I figured what the hell and said I'd take it. We think she's a girl, and she seems pretty healthy so far. She's a whopping 43 grams, so a pretty good size.

Here's some pictures. They aren't the greatest, because she's very quick and not the most cooperative.









She needs a name. Suggestions?

Dear god! I've never seen a newborn chin. I expected them to be more like rabbit babies--naked, eyes closed, etc. That girl is darn cute.

You should name her Elly.

She is cute, isn't she? She's not even 24 hours old in this picture. They are nest fleeing animals, so they're fully furred, with eyes open, and can eat solid food from the beginning, though they do nurse for about 6-8 weeks. We're hand feeding, which totally blows, but it's okay.

Oh shucks, too late to edit, but how about the name Thumbelina?

I had a really tiny premature puppy from a foster dog, we had to bottle feed her evry two hours, and we named her Thumbelina, she pulled through healthy as a horse.

I looked into getting a chinchilla before I got my piggies, my mom was sold on the idea too until she learned they can live to be 20+ years old!

I was up every 2 hours feeding this little one. I'm very tired today. And of course, I'm extremely busy at work today. Mostly busy work, but still. I was hoping to just coast. Oh well.

My uncle has a chin named Smokey. Not too original I know, but it works for the color...
