K9 Blood donation

Hi, I hope that I am allowed to post this and that it is in the right spot. If not I am sorry!

But I saw this ad on craigslist and I know how many of us are animal lovers out there. If my dog were up at school with me I'd totally take her to donate some blood. I can't vouch for the person who posted the ad, but I do know that UCD vet school techs are some of the best around.

I am also glad that they do pet blood donations. I know that a few months ago my dog was attacked while my mom was walking her and she had to have some blood transfusions. I am just so glad that she made it.

Here is the ad:

WANTED: K9 blood donors!

This second ad is someone testifying I guess....
WANTED: K9 blood donors! (UCD Vet School, Davis, CA)

or if anyone has done this and has stories/experiences to share I'd love to hear about it. I have never heard of this before. Thanks

Re: K9 Blood donation

In the UK there's a company called PetBloodBank that has started blood donations in dogs and storing it. We signed up for it when we were at Crufts and now we're taking our greyhound for his first one on Saturday!

Its excellent as your dog gets a free health check and full blood work up on a yearly basis and then he donates the blood and afterwards gets treats, a goody bag and a bandana! Best of all at least 2 dogs lives will hopefully be saved!

here's the site for UK people: Pet Blood Bank UK -

Dogs have to be between 1 and 8, over 25 kgs and generally fit and healthy.

Re: K9 Blood donation

Does anyone here know of canine blood donations or take their dog to donate?

Its a brilliant thing and should be more public. I'm really proud of Rambo but nervous at the moment as he will be getting his results after the weekend!

Re: K9 Blood donation

I haven't had any experience with K9 blood donating, but have seen a program on it on Discovery Channel's Animal Planet. It's been a couple years, but I think they said that German Sheppards are universal donors, etc. I don't know where the program was taped, but they actually had a blood mobile for K9s. I think it's absolutely wonderfull that they are making more advances in animal medicine.

I just did a search on Animal Blood Banks, and at one sight I did find this (which leavs my dogs out as they are all Chihuahuas )

Re: K9 Blood donation

I have heard about this. At the University of Guelph, it is where vets train to be vets, and all of the science is done for animal health, they have k9 blood donation.I have heard that greyhounds are the best donaters, that they have more oxygen in their blood than any other breed.

Re: K9 Blood donation

When Jack had to have a plasma transfusion earlier on last year, the vet proudly told me that they breed greyhounds especially for blood/plasma donations.

Re: K9 Blood donation

Piggy Grammy, I guess its like the human donations, you must be a certain weight to donate. (I dont think my dog can donate she's only 15 pounds)

I think that I'm going to do some research on k9 donations it seems like such an interesting topic. If I find any good info I'll post it here.
