Question Girl Scout Gold Idea...

I'm a senior girl scout and I'm in the process of achieving my Gold Award. However, I need a project in order to earn the award This is where I need everyones help. I can't come up with a project. I really want to do a project that means something, not just doing a project to do a project. The project has to benefit the "community". And it can't be within girl scouts itself. I'd really like to do something that would benefit the environment. My first idea was to raise a service dog, like the ones that go into hospitals and such but according to my girl scout council it "doesn't leave a lasting impact". But yet it's okay for a girl to re-do her church pews as long as she leaves a little brass plaque that has her name on it. I don't know but I think that a service dog has a longer, more meaningful impact than re-doing a church pew. I would love to do something with animals. My bronze and silver award both had something to do with animals and I'd like to continue that "trend" with my gold. I wish there was something I could do that would benefit guinea pigs and the community! If anybody has any suggestions that would be great!

(P.S. Mods-I think I put this in the right forum, but if it needs to be moved please, move it

Re: Girl Scout Gold Idea...

Hm...
You could hold a "pignic". Have a big fun kind of show for pigs. You could hold it at a local park (with permission). You could have classes like "Healthiest Pig", "Fattest Pig", etc, and winners get ribbons, and peraps a carrot for the pigs. And donate all of the proceeds to a piggy rescue. You could have booths set up educating on the dangers of breeding, showing, and about proper care of guinea pigs.
If you dont think there would be enough people there, you could do the same thing for dogs, and have each person donate say $25 for entry, and have games and contests and stuff. And get in touch with your local SPCA and donate all proceeds to them. You could see if they would bring ome up for adoption pups and have a "parade" of adotable dogs, and say there age and stuff. I think it would be great! We have something like that around here.

Re: Girl Scout Gold Idea...

Thanks for the idea! Unfortunately we can't directly fund raise or collect donations for other society's! It kinda stinks. My silver award was a community pet day and I had different organizations and rescue come and talk about different things. I'd love to do the guinea pig thing but I don't think there are a lot of people where I live that have piggies. I live in a very small town and most people have dogs or cats, too many of them I might add. The main focus of my silver was to get people to spay and neuter their pets Thanks again!

I am a Girl Scout Leader and maybe instead of the money part do an event but have people donate a bag of cat food, dog food, invite the animal shelter to bring some of the adoptable animals something like that. I am tryin to come up with some kind of thing like that for here.

Oh, thats a good idea. so if your raising food is it ok? Instead of charging a fee to get in, you could say please bring x items from thids list. You could still have the SPCA do a parade of adoptables, and you could have conetests and fun games and stuff. Winners of the contests could get ribbons and a dog toy (check out the $ store). You could have games set up, like tennisball throw, and trick test and the dogs could get biscuts. You could have a stand where you sell homeade dog biscuits, and inform about breeding, etc.

Re: Girl Scout Gold Idea...

yeah we have people give us donations of cookies to send to soldiers, we also do canned food drives for the food pantry, we do goodwill donations to donate to the goodwill clothing stores.... Check with your Service Unit Manager and your Council to make sure that will work

Re: Girl Scout Gold Idea...

You could adopt a rescue. One that needs help. You could go to stores like lowes to get them to donate supplies to fix up cages. You could help make repairs, Clean up and any necessary animal care(bathing etc). You could write letters to pet food companies and collect food and supply donations. There are tons of rescues even if its not for pigs. They have rescues for different breeds of dogs and cats. Many people do the same thing they do with pigs. Get a pet and get tired of it and send it to a rescue.
My mother in law had a wolf hybrid. She lived in a pen in the backyard. No exercise, no social opportunity. Just a dog in a yard that was fed and watered every day. I found a wolf hybrid rescue but she felt like she was taking good care of her. She said look at her she's happy.I don't know how a large dog in a 8ft square pen could be happy.
You could do a internet search for your state and rescue or your town and rescue. You might be able to find something close. It could positively affect your community.Private rescues need lots of help.

maybe even get a vet or vets to donate some time and vaccinations. Unfortunately too many people can't or don't get their dogs vaccinated. From what I have been hearing, there is even a new strain of parvo out now.

Re: Girl Scout Gold Idea...

Thanks so much for your suggestions! Please keep them coming. My problem is there is really nothing local pet wise, I live in a very small community. As of right now my fellow girl scout and I are the only ones to have ever eared the silver award in our county! My silver award was a Community Pet Day. I had people come with there pets and there were workshops on neutering and spaying, holistic dog food, dog massage, a Shetland pony lesson, pony rides, a stuffed animal parade (for the little kids) arts and crafts, doggie cake and a few other things, it was great! I don't want to make my gold too much like my silver if you know what I mean. Tee hee, I found out after I got my silver reviewed that it would have worked as a gold project! Thanks for all your suggestions! I'll post later on when I figure out what I'm doing!
