New Family Addition!

Today, we went to get 6 more baby chicks. As some of you already know, I have five already. We went there to get 3 rhode island reds, and 3 golden reds. They only had golden reds so we got them. We are going back for the rhode island reds next week.

I will try to get some pics posted tomorrow.

Re: New Family Addition!

We just had about 20 chicks hatch yesterday. With a bunch more due to hatch in the next week and a half or so. They are all so cute and fuzzy, especially the first few days.

We knew they would be hatching this weekend and when we looked Saturday there were only a couple of eggs that were pecked. By yesterday morning, only 1 had hatched. When I came back from town in early evening, a dozen had popped out of the shells. By the time we went to bed last night about 6-8 more had hatched. When I left this morning, there was one more.

We are down to about 8 laying hens. We ended up having about 6 roosters and only 3 hens with the batch that is about a year old now. Those 3 hens have just now started laying. Our last batch of chicks that is about 2 months old now are starting to get so big. We should be able to tell soon if they are roosters or hens.

Re: New Family Addition!

Wow! That is a lot of chickens! Don't your roosters fight with the hens and each other? That's the reason why we had to get rid of our two roosters that were thought to be hens.

Sorry I couldn't get the pics right away.

This is Pansy!

They all have different markings on their backs, but I'm worried since as they get older their markings start to change!!! Oh well, I will still be able to tell Pansy apart from the others since she has the biggest mouth ever. My dad has to leave the garage sometimes she gets so loud! They are kept in the garage sonce in there is a fireplace (to keep them warm), it is the only place where we can put a clamp light, and my mom isn't too keen on animals, let alone chickens.

Yes they do, which is why 4 of them are penned up. The other 2 mostly leave every one else alone. They will chase each other away from a hen but that is about it. The other 4 were constantly trying to fight with each other. These are the 1 year olds so I think it is just an adolescent thing and that when they get a little older like the other 2 that are loose they will settle down. I need to sell them but just haven't had the time to crate them up (separately) and take them anywhere. We only need the 2 roosters but sure could use a whole lot more hens.

And we just found out that one of the hens that disappeared is actually sitting on a clutch under the shed. We thought she had fallen victim to the hawk. Not sure how long she has been sitting so not sure when those will hatch.

Re: New Family Addition!

bamby71994, we keep them as pets, and for, the eggs. And I think I know about the chicken you are talking about. I am pretty sure it lived for eight months without a head.

Re: New Family Addition!

Cute little girls! I like their light yellow coloring. I am afraid of roosters. One attacked me when I was little, and I've never gotten over it. But we had chickens and ate their eggs.
