My kittties

This morning (at about 8:00 AM) my mom and sister took our kittens to the vet to get spayed and neutered, we came back at about roughly 2:30 PM, and they were in there seperate carries, and meowing like crazy! The whole way (about 45 mintutes, because it's a place that is way cheaper than a regular vet, but they only do it for rescued animals) home they were sleeping on and off, and when awake were meowing to get out, and Rocky even head butting the cage to get out! Well, we got home and let them out Princess, and Penny keep hissing and growling at Rocky, every time either he gets near them or they get near him. We gave them some fresh water, and they have been sleeping for a while, but I feel so bad for Rocky because just a minute ago when he tried to get on the chair where Princess is sleeping, she woke up and starting hissing and growling like crazy! He ran off with his head and tail down, why are they doing this to him?! I feel so bad! We have to give them all pain medication, that they gave us in syringes for the next three days, including today.

Re: My kittties

They all may be a little grumpy for the next few days. They all went through a lot and will need time to get over it. They may be better off in their kennels if they feel m ore comfy in there!

Re: My kittties

Okay, I'll try putting them out with there towels in them again, I have to wash them first because they all peed on them on the way home. How come they need pain medication, and when we had our first dog, Buddy, neutered he didn't get any medication?

Re: My kittties

None of mine had pain meds either, but I think they had antibiotics. It has been a while so it is hard to remember. The last animal I had spayed was about 10 years ago!

Re: My kittties

I cant remember if my dogs had pain relief afterwards. I do know that the vet gave them some pain medication which lasted 24 hours.

If you had had similar surgery, that is had your uterus or testicles removed, don't you think there might be some pain involved after the anesthesia wore off? While a lot of vets don't give pain meds after a spay or neuter, it's not uncommon either. Pain medications also supposedly mellow the animal out a bit, so he or she won't run around as much. All it did for Viviane when I had her spayed in December was keep her from being in pain. She still ran around like a maniac, so the "mellow the animal out" is really just theoretical.

Re: My kittties

They will fine! Just give it some time. Don't feel bad

I had my dog neutred a few years ago and he had a course of antibiotics afterwards.

Re: My kittties

When my cat got spayed she had a pain patch for 3 days. My dogs had pain meds, in pill form. I would want some for sure if it was me.

Re: My kittties

My cats were spayed and neutered over 9 years ago and I don't remember being given any pain medication to give to them. The only thing I remember care wise after the surgery was to make sure and not use gravel or sand type cat litter to keep from getting infections. I had to use newspaper strips for a few days.

Re: My kittties

My mom just said they probably gave pain meds for the kittens because they jump and pounce all the time, and that woudn't be good for them, and the pain meds would make them sleepy, so yup you guys are right. The towels are currently in the dryer so they are almost done. Percy's mom, yeah your right I would, but I was asking because it was the same vet that had done our dog, and hadn't given him any pain meds. Hey, is it okay if I keep the syringes for use when I get my cavies? I took all three of them completely apart, and held them under steaming hot water for three minutes each, as I don't think the pain meds (Metecam), would be good for a cavy to get at all!

Edited- We have pellet type litter so is that okay?

Re: My kittties

Metacam is used for pigs. My Buttercup is on 0.2mls of metacam three times a day currently. Saying that I always wash my syringes in boiling water after use.

Re: My kittties

Pellet litter is fine. I use yesterday's news for about 5 days after their surgery. I got a 5 week old kitten 4 months ago after his mom was killed by a car. He is going to get neutered tomorrow, so this thread reminded me I have to go out and get a bag of yesterday's news for him. Thanks!

Good luck with your kitties. I know it has to be done, but I always feel bad because I know it must hurt. I feel the worst for females, they go through alot more being spayed.
