And you thought your trip to the dentist was scary...

My mom and dad have a little Chinese Crested dog that they adopted a little over a year ago named Pumba. He is a spoiled little thing and my parents adore him. Cresties are a high maintenance dog and one issue is their teeth. They have very soft teeth that can crack or crumble very easily so regular dental care is a must. Even with regular brushing Pumba had quite a lot plaque so he had an appointment for a dental cleaning today at the vet.

The vet put him under with gas and his heart rate was fine at first then dropped rapidly. Luckily the vet struck him with the IV right away and brought him back but she told my mom that if she wouldn't have got it on the first try he might not have made it. The vet also said that she had a strange feeling that she had to be extra careful with Pumba partly because he was the only dog that had had a reaction to the Lyme vaccination this spring. The amazing part is that out of all the dogs she treats (she is the only vet in the city plus the surrounding rural area) she remembered that this particular dog had a reaction to a vaccine a month ago.

Nowhere on the health papers that my mom got when she adopted Pumba did it say that he had to be put under with IV only so this is probably the first time this has happened to him but now its marked in all his files. When my mom called she sounded pretty worn out and she said she had been hugging Pumba all afternoon. It turned out the dental was a good idea, Pumba had a cracked tooth which had to be pulled.

Wow, what a trip to the vet! I'm glad Pumba is doing better.

You dont happen to have a picture of Pumba to post, do you? Maybe wearing a cute little sweater?

I guess you have a thing for hairless animals, huh Fairysari!

Well I don't have any sweater pictures which is strange because the guy has a larger wardrobe than my dad, no joke. But here Pumba is in the buff. He looks almost strange to me in this because he's always wearing clothes. If it's not the cold bothering him than it's sun burn or bugs so he has to stay covered up. He has a lot of polo shirts and a biker hoodie which is super cute. As you can see he's not completely hairless, he's sort of in the middle between a powderpuff and hairless.

Re: And you thought your trip to the dentist was scary...

I few years ago when I was 9 our vet let me go to work with him to see what is was like. That day there was a dog who had his teeth done, after seeing what had to be done I made a promis that I would keep my dogs teeth clean(our dogs don't have sensitive teeth so it's easy).5 years later every new vet we have notices that our 7 year old golden's teeth look great.
