Theres something in my attic Okay my husband is being a complete turd bucket right now and I know there is something in my attic. I just heard it scurrying around above my head. I call my husband in here and he says I am losing it and that I am hearing things. I am not crazy. Question is how in the heck do I find out what it is? I am not fond of small animals that are not pets. I really do not want to call out and exterminator if I don't have to. Is there something I can do without having to call a professional?

Re: Theres something in my attic The first thing that I would do is go up there and find out what's running around. Then I would search for a possible nest or babies. If you insist on getting rid of it please look for a live trap. They are harmless to the animal and then you can set it free outside. Sometimes the SPCA will come out to help you.

Re: Theres something in my attic That happened in my parents' house. My mom heard scurrying around the attic, but my dad didn't believe her. Then one day, the scurrying stopped and suddenly the scurrying sounded like it was coming from inside the wall. The noise got so loud that my dad finally believed my mom and busted the wall open. Inside the wall were two opossums - a mom and a baby. Apparently, they were living in the attic and fell through some insulation stuff into the wall. My dad had to lure them out of the wall with water because they were too petrified to move; then he caught them in a cat carrier and took them to a more opossum friendly area to set them free. I'd check out what's living in your attic soon. PETA often has good, non lethal ideas for removing unwanted critters from you house. www.peta.org

Re: Theres something in my attic Thanks. I am probably going to have to have a friend or someone come and check because there is no way in heck I am going up in the attic where there are probably spiders and bugs and ewww. My hubby, love him but seriously I had to set the traps for the mice we had before. He is such a cry baby. I ma wondering if maybe it is mice but I have not noticed any of the signs of them being here. Last time we had them I saw the dropping and if there was food left out you knew they were around. I have all the pigs food out and next to the cage on the floor and have not seen and mice droppings or anything near it. I know we have a bunch in the garage (they came in the house last year in my Christmas tree box), but i don't mind that sicne they need somewhere warm to stay and I rarely go in the garage. Errrrr.

Re: Theres something in my attic What kind of traps are you setting for the mice? I'm assuming that you are killing them. If so I hope that you will consider buying a live trap. Most hardware stores carry them or buy online (PETA sells them too). You just put a little bit of bait in them (usually peanut butter) and wait for the animal to go in. Just make sure to check it everyday in case you did catch something. I used one at my parent's house and caught a mouse. He was adorable! I drove down the street and put him in a neighbors barn.

Re: Theres something in my attic Last winter when I had mice I did have snap traps for them. I will admit I did not want to chance letting it go in the exteme cold freeze or putting it in my garage when it might find a way back in the house (this was before we realized that they came in with the Christmas tree box and did not actually get in the house on their own). I will be getting a live trap this time if mice is the problem. The school I used to work at had a horrible mouse infestation. Every day we saw them running around somewhere in the classroom. They eventually became really brave and would trot out in the middle of the floor and play with each other when we had circle time with the kids. They chewed a hole in cupboard where we had our food supplies so one day I devised this trap for them. You know where you have a box and prop it up with a stick and pull a string that is tied to the stick? I swear I caught like 3 mice that way. It only took me about 100 tries. They were really cute and we took them and let them go in a field.

Re: Theres something in my attic Oy we have live traps in my house right now, we moved our old couch back into the house for winter, and a couple days ago we realised that there was mouse poop all around my computer room... errr... anyways my dad set up the traps, and I'm scared to walk into my computer room without a light on now because you cannot see anything, and I don't want to step on a little mousy.... I'm scared they will make it upstairs, and into my bedroom. They would literally have a hay day in there with all the animal, and food thats in my room. Even though mind you it is all sealed.

Re: Theres something in my attic Lyndsay, I think the mouse would hear you coming and scurry away before you stepped on it. They usually stay near the walls anyhow. I think the ones at the school were just so bold because they were around people and kids all the time. I probaly did not help the situation since I liked to scare my co worker and I would put food in the middle her room to lure them out.
