You can't save them all....

I have a close freind, who told me of a conversation she had. She has a rescue center for dogs. She said that when someone says to her that she can't save them all, this is the story she tells. I think it is really nice, but anyway.

Once there was a man, and at the same time every night he would drive to the beach and walk along the shore. One day, after the tide had been in and there were starfish stranded along the beach he saw an old man, picking the starfish up and throwing them back into the sea. He went to the old man, and watched him for a while. After a while, he said to the old man

" Why do you do that, you will never make a difference! There is to many, it's a waste of time. "

The Old man smiled, and replied " You think I will make no difference? "

The young man nodded, and the old man picked up another starfish and threw it into the sea.

He turned to the young man

" Just made a differance to that starfish "

So yeah, thanks for making a difference to those piggys lives, all you rescues out there

Yeah, I've heard that on this forum here before. I think it's a good story.

Re: You can't save them all....

I have rescued animals all my life. No matter where I live they find me. My father said to me "You can't save all the animals in the world.". I said true, But I can save the ones that come to me. And they do come. I don't have to look for them Dogs and cats just "show up" at my house. When people tire of their small animals I get a call. Those I cannot find homes for I keep.
Animals are my passion and my calling in life. Which is also true of many on this forum. Like AliceTittle says, and I second it, Thank you all out there for making a difference with GP's to all animals.

Re: You can't save them all....

I read a nice tagline that a person had that reads:

Never, never be afraid to do what's right especially if the well being of a
person or animal is at stake. Society's punishments are small compared to
the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way

Re: You can't save them all....

I actually got the "You can't save them all" line from my sis when she found out about the rabbit I was helping transport across the country. I told her, "I know, but I can save that one, and the few I'm able to adopt myself."

It blew my mind that she said that right after she told me about the awesome shelter she adopted her cats from.

Re: You can't save them all....

I've done rescue for years, and I always get the "You can't save them all" thing. But I've managed to make those close to me understand tat I will do what I can to help, so few people close to me ever say that anymore. I know I can't save them all. But I also know that I can save that one who needs me right now, and that's what matters to me.

Re: You can't save them all....

One time I was out at a swapmeat and there was a stray dog. I was really a puppy he was only about 3 monthes old. He was almost dead, someone dumped him. So I picked him up and took him back to my mom, then we took him to our vet. After we nursed him back to health, our vet got him adopted to a really nice family. It was so cool that we got to help him. The vet said that if we did not get him he would have been dead by the next day.
Any way the day that I got this little puppy my dad told me you can't save them all. I looked at him and said: But I can try!

Nicely said I'd rather try and save what I can than not try and let my conscience eat at me night after night because I did nothing.

Thanks AliceTittle for that inspiring story.

No one can tell me that there isn't love in this world... Just read the first few responses to Alice's story.

and another one from John.

It really makes me feel good that there is so much love for little creatures on this site. --- I believe with all my heart that ONE person CAN make a difference.
