Need some help

Ok i currently own a guinea pig that i baught from a breeder (She shows guinea pigs and this one had a brown spot so i got it cheap) and she threw in a basic cage but i was wondering where i could find a huge cage for my piggie to run around in, This cage is kind of dull and i need something that is big enough for more piggies (I hope to get about 4-5) but can be redesigned so that if i want to change something i dont have to buy a completely new set. I like the cube cage things but i dont know where to find them. Also i noticed a few cages don't have tops, Do your Pigs run away or get out when you dont seal off the top? how high do you make the cage? Thanks to all that can help.

Re: Need some help

Well congrats on the new pig. I hope that if you get more pigs you are sure they are all the same sex or that you plan to have them spay or neutered. Your best bet for a cage is to make one, this way you are not set to one setup and can change it as you go. On the main page of this website it explains where to find all the supplies you need to make one. I got my cubes at Target. The cages being 1 cube in height is tall enough so they cant escape if you dont want to add a top to the cage. If you are worried but still dont want to add a top you can make the cage two girds high just make sure you can get inside the cage to clean it. Hope this helps you some.

Re: Need some help

Thanks! When my mom gets home today she is taking me to K-mart or bed bath and beond so that I can get some Cubes. What would you reccommend as a flooring because I have noticed a few people using towels and some people getting the Plastic stuff and filling it with pine or aspen but I'm not exactly sure on mine, I have a 20 lb bag of pine that i baught from petco but I was thinking that maybe i could get mine to just go in the corner of the cage. Any ideas there?

Re: Need some help

Pine is ok as long as you air it out for 2 or 3 days if it isn't kiln-dried. You need to put bedding in the entire bottom of the cage. You will need coroplast (the plastic looking stuff) if you use the pine or you will have a horrid mess in the floor. Coroplast is corrogated plastic similar to cardboard but made of plastic instead. You can buy coroplast at sign shops and print shops. You cut it to fit the cage and make a large box out of it. If you have a Target near you, that is the best place to get cubes because they are pretty cheap there.

Also please get your mom to consider letting you get your pig a friend. Piggies are very social creatures and need friends. Also try to find a rescue or shelter to get your pigs from next time. Breeders and petstores aren't the best place to get them. You got the pig you did for cheap because the breeder can't show the pig with it's "brown spot".

Do your Pigs run away or get out when you dont seal off the top? how high do you make the cage?
Most cubes are 14" square. That is sufficient height to keep a pig in. Most pigs will not climb out of their C&C cages. If you have other animals in the house, you will need a lid for the cage. You can make a lid out of cubes.

Re: Need some help

No i don't need a lid, all i have is my hamster (Escape artist :P ) And my piggie. But I dont know where to get a ramp from. I couldn't find anything at home depot or anything but i think I'll just get a large pvc pipe and cut it in half and put a carpet over it or something.

Re: Need some help

I use pvc pipe as a ramp. I had my dad saw it in half lengthwise for me so it has slight curving sides. It's a half circle shape. I use fleece on it attached with binder clips. Make sure it's at least 4" diameter pipe. You will need to have a couple of holes drilled on the sides near the top of it so you can attach it to the grids. I use pipe cleaners to attach it so I can easily remove it when cleaning the cage.
