Re: A commercial cage that is big enough?

But Atleast it is a good start. It would be a LOT better than people buying the plastic tiny cages!

If i had see this before, I would of gotten this cage in a heartbeat.

I agree with C&C's being a pain in the behind to work with. Mine seem to sag, or not fit correctly. Plus Chloroplast reeaaaaaaaaaaaallllyyyyyy sucks to measure and cut. My chloro needs to be trimmed because it is realy un level from the extra peice made for the girls cage.

I guess it's all a matter of perspective. Have you ever tried anything else? I had to use a HACK SAW to try to cut down the sides of a plastic Super Pet cage to make a gateway for a ramp to connect two cages together way back when. The plastic splintered and broke and I had to have my boyfriend do it at that. And it left jagged edges that had to be covered.

Plexiglass--forget about it, you have to have a plastics shop do for $$.

Wire cages, forget that, too.

I don't know what the big deal is with cutting Coro. All you need is a heavy duty pair of scissors, even regular scissors will work. It's a pretty dang sweet and brilliant solution if you ask me.

You know the old saying, measure twice cut once. Sounds like a personal problem to me!

I didn't have a problem making my cage at all. The coroplast is great so easy to clean and keep clean.

I have the equivalent of 9 + 8+6=23 Cubes of cage space right now, and I think only ever used 2 sheets of coroplast. Where the heck are they charging you 45 bucks? I bought the white, corogated plastic.

Here's my pretty piggy cage.
They're selling it at a 'FastSigns' store in West Palm Beach, Florida. They were really nice, though.

Hi Wigglegiggles1

Just wonder if you still able to get those grids in your area.
I tried to look for them but failed. =(
I am lucky cause I got free coroplast from the realestate even it is not prefect but saving from buying them that great. I did find out from signboard agent, they are selling 1200mm x 1800mm for AUD40. I am glad I got them for free.
Now I wish I able to locate those wire cubes. I need to get all those things first before getting the GP.

Re: A commercial cage that is big enough?

I happen to have this two story ferret cage. I bought it when I got my second piggie and that was actually 4 months into being a new piggie mom. I thought I had made the best purchase in a cage for my babies, but I was wrong. They do not have enough running or playing space and it's extremely messy. I now have six piggies, which I adore, and since I found this site a few days ago, I guess I can say I have a huge upcoming project.
I LOVE THE CAGES YOU GUYS BUILD FOR YOUR PIGGIES!!
So, I have been reading and looking around in this site to educate myself on how to build one. If I new how to start a "blog", I think it's what it's called, I would ask for help that way. Any help I can get would be highly appreciated. I did find one person on here that has pics and very good insctructions on how to build one. Thanks is advance for any help on using this site and with building cages.

Re: A commercial cage that is big enough?

C&C's are fantastic IMO. When your purchase any made pet cage, you are very limited to what you can do. You cant make it bigger if you decide to get another piggie, you can't alter it to make it the best fit for a specific area in your house. You cant easily disassemble it and store it for when your moving. Your stuck. You pay way to much for such limited versatility.

Re: A commercial cage that is big enough?

Yes I agree that I payed way too much!! Being a new GP mom I thought I was making the best purchase available to me. However, now that my GP family is up to 6, and I found this site, I know I can provide a much better environment for my babies. They are happy in their present setting, but I know now that I can give them more playing space and make my cleaning time much more easier with a the type of cages I see on this site. Later today I will post new pics on my profile so all of you can see the setting I have them in. Thanks all for the help. God bless!!

Re: A commercial cage that is big enough?

It took me a couple of weeks to get all the parts. Kinko's wanted a hundred dollars for a 4 x 8 sheet of coro. I had to hunt but, I found a 4 x 8 sheet for twenty dollars. That was white, then I got a green sheet for twenty five dollars. I couldn't find the wire grids, so I'm using poly grids for now, until I can get the wire. I want pink from Wal Mart. I have to get them on line. My cage is 2 x 7 right now. When I work on it again, it will be 2 x 10.

Actually, I used Plexiglas instead of chloroplast. It works fantastic and wasn't too hard to make. As long as it's straight cuts, it's not too hard (all of mine was cut with a razor blade cutter). I like it because it's clear.

If you need help you need to start a new thread in the appropriate forum section. Blogs are not for getting help. Blogs are kinda like a diary in some ways or to be used to share stories with us or tell us mroe about yourself and your pigs. Help with different areas of care should still be posted on threads.

I guess it does depend on where you live. My latest C&C cages cost me a whopping £90(!) to build.

Actually I found my dad's Stanley knife much easier and quicker to use than scissors, and it cuts the edges really neatly!

I would recommend everyone to use them. They are very sharp though so a thick wood board (although I just used lots and lots of newspaper) needs to be placed underneath whilst cutting!

Re: A commercial cage that is big enough?

I looked at these Midwest cags before. I actually think they are pretty good.

Personally I wouldn't use any commercial cage for a guinea pig or anything larger - I am totally converted to C+Cs. I found it fairly easy to make. My problem was the cost - I was lucky to get my grids half price before Argos stopped stocking them, but the coroplast cost me a fortune in price and delivery (had to use ebay).

But having spent so much time on Yahoo answers, I have noticed that many people simply will not make their own cage - no matter how cheap or easy it would be. In these cases I will recommend buying a C+C through this site, or as a last resort looking at those Midwest guinea pig habitats. They may not be perfect - but I think if people insist on a commercial cage, and it is this or some crappy normal cage half the size, then this is definately the better option.

Incidentally, I also contacted Midwest about their appaling rabbit cages. They were actually really helpful, and apparently they are in the process of disgning new rabit cages, with at least one model that will meet the 2x6 foot minimum requirement.

You can order C&C cages online. Some rescues even sell them locally.

You make some good points. Here is my opinion:

1. There is a "find materials section on the home page:
Where?
I got my coroplast at lowes (they sell small pieces that you can just tape together.

2. You would still have to use bedding to absorb the urine. Fleece is very inexpensive at walmart. You can get a yard for about $5 which is about all you need.

a good thing to put under it is just some old beach towels.

3. You can actually make a lid with some leftover grids. You dont need a lid, but it might be helpful.
