Re: Help!!! i wanna build me a nice size Guinea Pig cage

to build a top level, just make it out of grids. If you want to know how to make a ramp, there are pictures of some in the photo galleries

Ok, so you are building a c and c cage before getting them? And getting everything else before? Or are you just getting the pigs and all in one swoop, so that they will have to be waiting for you to set everything up in that little cardboard box? If you already know you're getting some, how about setting up in advance, not just on the fly as soon as they're there.

Also, you didn't answer about the pet store. Please adopt, I'm sure there are plenty of homeless piggies in your area needing homes.

If you're getting them from a store, then you'll need to get one fixed, so you'll need two cages to start off with. After the neutering process, you'll need to keep the male in his seperate cage for at least two to three weeks. Not to mention that you would have to have two cages anyhow, because the two will need to be kept seperate for quarantine for two weeks.

If your intent is not to breed them, you'll need to have one fixed, which will need to be set up, and which will also take time. If you can, it's much more preferable to get two of the same sex--they'll get along just as well as a m-f pair.

You just need to add a level on and a base for that level, surf through the pictures.

Thanks for your reply.

Re: Help!!! i wanna build me a nice size Guinea Pig cage

weel, how are you going to stop them from breeding? because you know, i don't think that is a good idea, you would have to have a spay/nueter surgery and that's risky and you might have problems like that, why not keep them in a divided cage or something, or keep boars and sows, but keep them in seperate cages?

Buying pigs from pet store/best food/ cubes

Okay, your first question, the grids at Walmart contain only 16 grids. Including shipping, it's over $25. You're better off trying Target as you can get 24 grids at 14.99 or less on sale.

Second: I think someone had advised earlier that you investigate a rescue or shelter to adopt a piggy. I would be more confident that a shelter/rescue pig was taken care of correctly from an educated individual, that it's healthier, non-pregnant, AND you'll have a higher probability they know what sex it is. You cannot expect that from a pet store. Also I think many shelters or rescues are educated in C & C cages, so perhaps they can help with your cage building.

Please read thoroughly the following: http://www.cavyspirit.com/petstores.htm

Try posting in "Cavy Chat" about this, and also post there for the food question.

Good luck

Re: Help!!! i wanna build me a nice size Guinea Pig cage

I agree, please try a rescue or shelter. There are many homeless cavies in Indiana needing homes.

go to target. You get more cubes and cheaper. You can get 24 crates for 14.99. And costcos sells them too. You get 30 crates for 18.99.

2 x 6 in a pet store? How many are in the 2 x 6?

Not for the most part, that's unlikely. I'm sure there are a few pet stores with educated staff, but I've only heard of, and have first-hand knowledge that any pet store staff is clueless about proper care for GPs. BTW, if they were educated, they wouldn't be selling animals, only supplies.

There are three Targets in Fort Wayne, is that too far for you?

Also, for rescues, I'm having someone check into your area. Rescues/shelters are sometimes willing to travel to meet you if you meet the application critera.

Re: Help!!! i wanna build me a nice size Guinea pig cage

If you don't already have your cage built read this. Big Lots may sound cheap but it's really not. I got my cubes there and it only cost me $20! I got an 8 cube set. there is nothing wrong with them.

Ha! You beat me to it!

Ghetto2k4, please forget the pet store and consider a rescue or shelter. An actual rescue will guarantee the good health of your new pigs and will also ensure that they get along.

Most rescues would be quite happy with someone adopting a small group of three or four.

Ghetto, I have no idea whether or not you're still reading this thread, but after a very short look around:

AWL of MontgomeryCounty
Crawfordsville, IN 765-362-8846

Lovin' Homes Rochester, IN 46975 (you can look up the number for this one, there seems to be a lot of piggies in this one

Just give a few of them a call. They all have guinea pigs. They may travel to you in northeast Indiana IF you can meet the application criteria. Or they may have some suggestions where you could look.

You sound like you already have your mind made up about that pet store, but if you really do care about the animals, please just read this:http://www.cavyspirit.com/petstores.htm
