Nine pets and a pencil.

We live with nine pets at the moment. Three firebelly newts (Reese, Malcolm and Dewey), three Apple snails (Gary, Gary and his other brother Gary) and of course our fave boys the Guinea pigs (Truffle, Gizmo and Rolo). Ya, I know. I seem to have a thing about trios.
We are currently now on day 5 of our tv free week. It is the best thing I've ever done. Last night in fact K said to me that she really likes not watching tv anymore! I was so proud to come home from work today to find that she was writing a story featuring the GPs. I'm sure that the rest of them will probably figure into her story at some point.
She finished making the hidey house for the pigs yesterday. It is complete with a shuddered window, flap door and a doorbell. She also read a whole book on the weekend and is now almost done reading The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. This is from the kid who I had to send to her room with the instructions that she wasn't to come out until she had read at least 2 chapters of her school reading book.
In fact I made a deal with her. There is a series of book that she really likes. It is more of a comic in hardcover, but if it keeps her reading... It's called Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The new one is out now and we agreed that if she is willing to give up tv for another week I'll get her the book tomorrow. Guess what.. she agreed!!

Way to go! I remember when I was a kid I used to say I wanted to burn books (horrible I know!). After sixth grade and the Harry Potter series I can't stop reading. I now want to be a librarian. Imagine that!
The Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a really good book to get your non readers to read. Another one along those lines is Amelia's Notebook.
Not sure how old she is but the Junie B. Jones series is good beginner chapter book. If she is more around the 4-6 grade try some of the latest Nutmeg books. Many local libraries get a TON of them to do summer reading groups.
Any more questions on kids books, let me know. I'm a bit out of date (3 years since I got out of high school and can't volunteer at the children's library) but I go to another one up at school to see their guinea pigs and I can get some good titles for you from there.Posted 03-04-09 at 06:35 am by starshine123102

Thats SO great. You have to post a pic. of the hidey house! And a copy of her story!
I loved the Clique Series. I am a horribly fast reader (a book a day) so it only took me about an hour per book but all my friends it tool longer. Of course it's more for the 5-7 range.
I also loved those Dear America books. The diary's from long ago. Thats good if she's into history.
When I was in 4th grade I read Esperenza's Rising. You HAVE to get her to read that. It's about all the imigrants and such. But it's more about a 13 yr old rich girl who loses everything and hass to work for nothing.
Star Girl was great for everyone. It really made you think and it's about a modern day girl. Eggs was good. Both I beleive are by Jerry Spenellie.Posted 03-04-09 at 06:05 pm by AnimalHouse36

Thank you both so much for the book suggestions. I will look into/suggest those to her. We went to the book store as planned tonight but couldn't find the new "Wimpy kid" book after all. However all was saved when she found the new installment of her all time favorite series. Now she is chomping at the bit to read Dear Dumb Diary #8: It's Not My Fault I Know Everything.
Her favorite things to read are humour and fantasy/action types of books. So please if anyone has any suggestions about titles that are at a grade 5/ soon to be 11 year old reading level, I am very interested!Posted 03-04-09 at 09:26 pm by Somanypets

Also, she may be a bit young for it as they are mostly listed as ages 12-15 but Donna Jo Napoli takes classic fairy tales (Beauty and the Beast, Rumplestiltskin[?], Jack and the Beanstalk etc.) and vamps them up a bit.

Another author is Tamora Pierce. Amazon shows it as ages 10-13, but it does have a bit of sexuality in it (and at 11 I'm sure most of it would go over her head anyway as it's not explicit), so I would probably put it in an older age bracket. I read the series in 7-8th grade but I'm pretty sure my friend who inroduced it to me was younger when she started it. She has one "series" that is broken down into 3 quartets. Song of the Lioness, The Immortals, and Protector of the Small. They all have the same characters but each miniseries focuses on a new female character.
Here's the link to the first book: Amazon.com: Alanna: The First Adventure (Song of the Lioness, Book 1): Tamora Pierce: BooksPosted 03-05-09 at 06:50 am by starshine123102

The lioness series by Tamora Pierce is amazing. I loved it when I was younger. Theres also a seriese called I believe the circle of magic. It's really good too. I used to be a huge fantasy fan. As for humor, I'm not sure if they're too old for her but I love the Georgia Nicholson Diaries. They're laugh out loud funny. They might be something to work up to thoughPosted 03-26-09 at 10:34 pm by BabyBellie
