So there I was, minding my own business when I saw a friend on my facebook posted a link to Genpets.

At first I was freaked right out. Not only was I outraged that they were "playing god" so to speak but they were also selling them as pets?! So I did a little google searching. Which made me want to post this in a blog on here.

This man created them for a few reasons and this one really made me what to post this.

In the end, research follows funding and many times funding leads out of commercial profit. Thus Genpets takes a step back to examine trends in the pet craze and ponder where a new technology like Biotech might take it (there are already companies such as Allerca though selling bio-engineered pets in reality, or Glofish in Asia).
Genpets also echoes current situations. While the pets in plastic disturbs many, how is this much different from a pet store? Glass versus plastic is not a huge change, but taken in a different context causes a reaction. Perhaps a more critical step is to look into the basis for Genpets.
Very creepy and very smart all at the same time.

I know that. Hence the second URL, *laughs* but boy oh boy, when I saw the first one I wasn't sure.

I looked at the first website and thought it may be fake by the Cafepress ad at the bottom and due to me never having seen it on the news or anything. When I read it - and how professional it looked - I thought, kay maybe they are for real, but when I got up to the part where you can choose personalities by colour and that the lifespan came in options of one or three years, (and also that they never supplied any pictures of the out-of-packaging animal) I knew it was fake - if they want to fool people, they should probably have left those bits out. Googled afterwards.

Personally, I find these sort of things amusing. The reactions they must get out of it! I followed a link to the Museum of Hoaxes and had a good laugh; the spaghetti tree one was brilliant. I remember reading somewhere that the radio read an alien-invasion (fiction) story once and people assumed it was news updates and that we were getting invaded. My favourite of all time would have to be the movement to ban dihydrogen monoxide - I've fooled many classmates with that one. ^.^
