I need to find a new home for my 2 females. I do not want to go in to details on this board, but if you are interested in them and want to know the reason I can share with you. They are both about 5 months old. Short haired, one is all black and the other is white, red, and tan.

I'm interested in your girls. I live in Arlington, Texas though. Are they healthy? Please let me know. Thanks! :)

Hi,

The girls are doing great, still scared in their new surroundings, but we will be patient with them. We had them out for just 15 minutes tonight, I think we will try small amounts of time, they looked very scared and not sure of where they were. They love veggies, I am going to hold off tomorrow and wait until I see if they start eating more pellets and hay before they get more veggies.

They are very sweet, :love:but need some time to adjust.

The veggies are more important than the pellets, please give them their veggies whether they are eating the pellets or not.

Thank you ! I appreciate the info, I am new to the GP scenelol I just checked in on the girls and I "think" they are eating their pellets and some hay. I was worried that they may end up with diarreha. I have given them romaine, red pepper, parsely, cherry tomato, baby carrots....so, how much should I give? I read not to give too much parsely because it is too high in calcium, give cilantro.

I want to hand feed them their veggies so they associate good foods/treats with us and us touching them, they are still trying to adjust to our home and their new home.

I am open for any ideas, I have been trying to read as much as possible, but sometimes things others have done and worked well are worht trying.

Here's the list of veggies I use:

cavy-cool-crazy said:
Guinea pigs must have at least one cup of fresh vegetables each day each. Good veggies to offer daily include:

Lettuces - all types but iceberg (contains mostly water and very little nutritional value), Good lettuces are Romaine, Green/Red leaf, butterhead/boston, curly or belgian endive, raddichio and others.
Cilantro (coriander)
Peppers - all colours, no seeds
Baby carrots - one small/medium per pig or same equivalent of regular carrot.
Chard, Red or Swiss is most commonly preferred
Zucchini (Courgette)
Corn husks and silks
Cherry/grape tomatoes (no more than 1-2 per pig)

Good every other day foods:

Parsley
Celery - chopped up small plus leaves
Cucumber
Broccoli leaves
Dandelion greens
Green beans
Summer and Winter squash (all varieties)
Chicory Greens

Some fresh foods should be limited to twice per week:

Fruits - apple, plum, apricot, melon, cucumber, peach, grapes and a few others.
Cabbage
Broccoli
Herbs such as Dill, Chives, Basil, Mint, Thyme
Collard Greens/Turnip Greens/Mustard Greens
Kale
Spinach (in small amounts)
Asparagus
Beets
Brussel Sprouts
Cauliflower
Sweetcorn on the cob
Pumpkin
Turnips

Other foods, such as radishes, banana, sweet potato and beet greens should only be given as occasional treats, say once or twice a month.

Vegetables are important to provide essential vitamins, and if provided with a good variety of fresh foods daily, there is rarely a reason for supplements of any kind to be given.

Parsley is a good every other day food. Cilantro is a great food to be fed daily, especially since it is very cheap.

And for more information on guinea pig care read through the links on this thread: https://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/introductions/17032-newbies-please-read-post-first.html

I'm glad these pigs found a loving home.

Everything can be given daily except parsley. They can have a few leaves each of romaine daily, several slices of red pepper, 1 cherry tomato each and 1 baby carrot each. If you try cilantro instead of parsley, they can each have a nice handful. With the parsley though you want to limit it to just a few sprigs every other day.

Thank you for the great suggestions, the girls were talking up a storm this morning and they munched down their fresh dish of veggies! I tried to get them to take some from my hand, one girl did, but they are still tenative!

Does anyone give daily VIT C? in the winter?

If you are giving a good variety of fresh veggies daily, you won't need a Vit. C supplement at all.

And if you do have to give Vit C. supplements (if they get sick, for example) either give them 1/4 of a 100mg tablet-dissolved in water and syringed to them, not in their water bottle!-or find liquid Vit C. drops, like in a GNC store.
