I have a similar problem in that my guinea pig is eating the masking tape that is covering the sticky tape that is holding the coloplast together in the shape of a cage. The tape he's eating is paper based and non toxic so its not a major problem at the moment but its one i would realy like solving otherwise i'll have to go round the cage again sticking a load back on. The paper tape isn't holding the cage together, its simply there to stop him getting to the plastic tape underneath that might harm him. At the mo my only option is to chase him off it whenever i notice him doing it but he's a very cheeky piggie.

My pig Snickers used to do that, but I've managed to stop him. I put cubes on the inside of the cage, in front of the Coro, so now he can't get to it.

Does he have other things to chew, like unilimited hay? Or maybe a stick from a fruit tree? We have a maple tree stick in our cage but they mostly like the hay.
Also, could you possibly get him a friend? That might also keep him too busy to mess with the cage.

thanks tatalp! you just gave me a brilliant idea! i can put some chicken wire directly over the coro, w/o taking up any room in the cage. im just gonna mold it over the wall of coro, and maybe it will teach him to stop

Bad idea to use chicken wire as it may very well harm your piggie.

i would absolutally love to get him a friend! but i hardly doubt my parents will go for it. i can give it a try! i have actually been thinking about asking them, i just have not had the guts to since they allowed me to get a big cage, and might not be up for more begging. LOL. but i am going to try!!!

Best thing to do is to get your piggie a same sex friend (and make sure you cage is big enough for them both) and you'll find that it really will improve your piggies health and happiness as they are herd animals. Also giving them unlimited amounts of Timothy Hay is a must.

My guinea pigs chew on the coroplast when they want something. ie. floortime.

They know when it's time to go out, so they'll sit in front of the door & chew loudly. This behaviour only started when I got Porky. He was the only one to do it, & then Phoebe copied him.

Have you noticed your guinea pig doing it at a specific time of day. Is he relaxed or excited when he does it? It may also be boredom. If that's the case then a friend would definitely help. You could always show your parents this site:

https://cavyspirit.com/sociallife.htm

This way they may understand that you're not asking just because you want another, but because it's for your guinea pig's wellbeing. Just approach them about it in calm manner. If they say no the first time, just ask them to read that website & discuss it with them. You could also offer doing certain chores, help around the house, etc.

Try covering the coroplast with some fabric, that usually stops them chewing it.

As for getting another guinea pig, it is definetly a must. To persuade your parents, really get all the facts on why it is a need rather than a want. Talk to them calmly, have a serious talk and if it doesn't work the first time, just say ok. Then try again in a week or two. I would also defintley show them the site that Citronsoul has posted.

Good luck!

All of my cages are placed inside of the coroplast. This way the piggies do not have any access to the coroplast. Hopefully you will be able to adopt a same sex friend for your piggie. Take a look at www.PetFinder.com.
