He has really bad pnuemonia and is so congested. My vet gave me a cherry flavored antibiotic to give to him. I also gave him some yogurt, water and OJ thru a syringe, but he is so weak and is having such a hard time breathing. My fiance took him to another vet to see if there was anything he could do besides the medicine. She is still there now. I just don't know if he is going to make it or not :weepy:

I dont mean to sound rude, but aren't guinea pigs lactose intolerant? I would think yoygurt would be bad for them? I apologise if I am wrong

I am sorry for your sick guinea pig (((Hugs)))
Yes, you shouldn't give him yogart, and I don't think you should give him oj either because it has too much sugar in it.

You need to handfeed him actual food/pellet mash: https://www.guinealynx.info/handfeeding.html

What AB is it? Maybe it isn't working and another AB would be more effective? Doxy works well. Or Doxy/Lasix combo.
Good luck.

Yes, I agree to ditch the yogurt and the orange juice. I would give a pellet mash or critical care and mix it with plain flavored pedialyte. If the piggie needs a probiotic, then get some acidophilus capsules or poo from a healthy piggie.

OJ = Vitamin C

Why the hell would a vet tell me to do something if it was going to hurt the pig?

There really isn't much Vitamin C in OJ. If you need to supplement with Vitamin C, then get some plain sugar free liquid C that you can dose with a syringe and give approximately 25-50 mg per day.

Many vets aren't up to date on guinea pig care so they don't always do what is best but what they were taught from when they went to school. Many of your average vets are not specialized in the care of small critters.

You can call up health food and vitamin stores in your area to see if there's sugar-free vitamin C liquid available that you can get your hands on immediately. Then you can give measured doses.

Is the second vet an exotic pet specialist? If so, great. If not, ask either vet if there is an exotic pet specialist in your area. Many vets have lists of who is who. That's how I found our vet.

We'll all keep Ferdinand in our thoughts.
