I suspect mites and/or lice. Tuppence has a slight bald patch on her back, with very pink and red skin. I saw little black specks in the area, so I am thinking lice. Charlie has very dry, white skin on his black ears. He had this before and the diagnosis was mange mites.

I would treat the pigs myself, but I have found nowhere that will ship Ivermectin and Advantage to Northern Ireland for a decent price. And they won't sell it over the counter to us either. In a way I want to take them to the vets to get treated, a) because I want them to have a general check-up too, and b) I get to see how good the exotics vet here is.

I know Lottie and Jaz need to go too, but my mum just wants to take Charlie and Tuppy this week, and then the other 2 next week.

Well they've got to go at 4.30pm tonight (in an hour and a half). All of them are going to see the lovely vet man. Jasmine has never been to the vets before, Lottie hates being touched which should make matters difficult, Tuppy was as good as gold last time she went and Charlie was a big softie and squealed when he had an injection for mites last time. I will definitely update you when we get back!

I would seperate them into the pairs until they all have a treatment for it. I don't know if Tuppy and Charlie could get mites again from Lottie and Jasmine if they also have it.

CCC - though I don't condone shopping there whenever possible, Pets at Home is now stocking topical ivermectin. I bought some just in case and I'm going to seek advice on administering it on GL forums. If you can't get a hold of it in NI I'm more than happy to send you some if you want?

Thanks for the offer daft...I may take you up on that if I can't find anything at all in NI.

It turned out to be an interesting vet visit. Charlie was looked at first. The vet said it was veyr unusual for mites to be confined to just the ears. He checked for ringworm, but turned out negative. He checked over the other pigs also.
I couldn't remember the name of the injection given but now after looking on GL it was definitely Revolution (Selamectin). He treated all the pigs with this injection. Charlie squealed loudly and looked at me with sad eyes, Tuppy squealed for a second and gave me evil looks, Lottie squealed louder than I have ever heard her squeal before, and Jazzie gave a little squeal and just gave me terrified looks.

The one thing I was unsure about was the fact that he put a spray on them called Frontline. It is intended for cats and dogs and kills any fleas and their eggs. It smelled awful. He squirted the spray into his hands and then stroked the piggies with it.

It cost £30 in total for all 4 pigs - £20 consultation fee and £10 for treatment. I'll just have to see if the treatment actually works. If not I may be contacting you for the Ivermectin daftscotslass!

Feel free to email me if you need to. I've had OK results with selamectin. I used it topically as Bracken was being treated with it when I got her, so I had to follow the treatment too. It caused localised hair loss (though this wouldn't happen with an injection) but cleared up both her ear and mange mites at the time.

Thank you daft, that's brilliant. At least I know the selamectin should work. When I get the money into my account to pay you I shall let you know and ask you to ship some over for me. It would be reassuring to know that it's to hand if I ever need to treat them for mites again. :)

I am sorry to hear of your recent problems. Hopefully with any luck the treatment will work.

I found the following link of Frontline. At least you will have an active ingredient to look at:(seems to be Fipronil)

(broken link removed)

I have never heard of revolution being injected before.

Good luck, hope the piggies are feeling better soon!

Whew, I would hate to think of Miss Tuppy loosing any of that gorgeous hair.
