I'm going to order from Joanns but I'm confused about what to buy. Okay as I understand it, the bedding is sewn in layers - right? Fleese or Flannel (the difference would be what) And then the absorbant layer would be what? I checked Joanns and can't seem to find anything that would soak well. HELP!! |

It does not have to be sewn together. for absorbent layer you could use towels, mattress pads, puppy pads, or some combination. Have you read the fleece research thread? http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...ect-study.html |

Flannel is cotton and would not wick like fleece. |

You could use flannel or terrycloth for the bottom layer and then fleece as the top layer to wick the urine into the terry or flannel. |

Flannel isn't absorbent enough. You need towels or a mattress pad or something very absorbent like that. |

Flannel CAN be very absorbant, but you'd need a lot of layers of it, like 5 or 6, or "quilt" it with something like bamboo or cotton batting. Terry cloth (either towels, or the kind that comes by-the-yard at a fabric store) works well, also. The fleece you want from JoAnn's is called "Anti-pill" OR "Blizzard". Either will work. |

I just ordered terry cloth and fleece (anti-pill and blizzard) from Joanns today...they have a wonderful selection of $4.99 fleece. Also, I should note that I typically order my fabric from Fabric.com as they always have a nice selection and good deals. Currently, fabric.com has terrycloth on sale for $5.98 per yard in a variety of colors. Unfortunately, Joann didn't have the variety of colors, and I ordered a few yards of "star blue" from there, and I have no idea what it looks like because there wasn't a color swatch available. Anyway, I think if you spend $35 at fabric.com you get free shipping (I believe that's an all-the-time deal though, because I've been ordering from there for years (I LOVE IT!) and I always get free shipping because I order so much fabric). They do have some fleece on sale for $5.98/yard, but it's cotton candy fleece. Nice, pretty colors, but not as fun as the prints at Joann. Fabric.com also sells notions (for things like boning to use for cuddle cups, etc...), but not as much as Joann. Today was my first day of ordering from Joann online...usually I go with the other site because Joann is more expensive, but that wasn't the case today! So, yeah...terrycloth works very well for under the fleece. I agree that flannel is too thin and you would need several layers for that to work. Anti-pill and blizzard fleece is good! |

Don't forget the fleece throws that are everywhere now are just fine. They are even sold in my grocery store now ! I have bought them for as little as $2.50 at Big Lots. I cut some up for pads for under the hideys as they do not fray in the wash. I put an old terry kitchen towel under and it is perfect and keeps the "big" fleece cleaner, longer. |
