Re: Bedding? fleece?

You can use pretty much whatever absorbent layer underneath your fleece. However, I find that towels tend to be more absorbent. I use ten towels (as of Sunday) and it works great so far! Also, if the bedding is kiln dried then it is fine.

Re: Bedding? fleece?

Newbies cannot thank posts. You have to have been here for 30 days with at least 10 posts to give thanks. Also your status will change to Cavy Slave at that time.

It wasn't under the wrong prefix as it didn't have a prefix. It was posted in the wrong forum section and now has been moved to the proper section.

Towels are best but I am about to try a blanket in my new 3x6 cage when it is made. IF it doesn't work out, I can always post that here too and I would start with towels for yourself (I did) cause they do work WELL. I may be going back to them soon enough Just wanted to try a blanket under the fleece and save on some laundry so time will tell this story

Re: Bedding? fleece?

In both of my 3x4 cages I put a folded cotton blanket down (first bottom layer and the blanket is folded in half) then I did 1 layer of towels and then another cotton Blanket on top of the towels and then I wrapped the fleece around all of this.

So far my borrowers haven't tried to borrow yet and I have steped inside the cage and it is softer than my carpeted floors and my kids like to lay in the cages with the piggies to play with them after I do the daily sweeping. The blankets and towels seem to be doing a wonderful job since the fleece is staying dry and I don't feel any wetness when I sweep the cage since I have to go into their cage when I sweep it up.

This made me giggle with the image it put in my head of "The Borrowers." I know you meant burrowers--I do that kinda typo all the time, and every time I smack my head as soon as I see it irrevocably etched in post history--but it made me imagine that you had little tailed people-like creatures in a C&C. I couldn't help it!

Back on topic though, I use just towels and fleece. The fleece I measure to the inside width of my cage plus enough to hook over the walls. Cut a small square from each corner equal to double the height of the walls minus a half inch and sew those new sides together. Then you have a burrow-proof, poop-sculpture-resistant, pee-catching wonder.

Good luck!

Re: Bedding? fleece?

I am hoping this extra soft blanket I got at my local Big Lots will do as well as my towels did. I decided to try it along with the fleece and use towels in the corners where they potty the most but worse comes to worst, I will go back to my trusty towels I too have TWO out of FIVE "burrowers" so I doubt I will keep them from going underneath the fleece. (I have used BRICKS even to NO avail) Two of my girls just LOVE to burrow so I may have to "borrow" back my towels when the blankie fails

Re: Bedding? fleece?

Tee hee hee.

One of my boys, the baby, is a burrower. He can't get under fleece if there's no way to get under it. This way I don't have to worry about bricks, but I do think i need to make him a cozy alternative to the current tunnel he has. It's his favorite, but it gets icky pretty fast.

Hope you have luck with your borrowing and your burrowers.

Re: Bedding? fleece?

I am not sure if you can get it in your countries but in South Africa we have a "Floor Mop Cloth" it is a piece of material that is like a dish towel but it is super absorbent - perfect for those accidental spills of red wine on carpets. I got a few of these and placed them at the bottom of the cage with some fleece over it but for some reason Gizzy likes to dig till she gets to the "Floor Mop Cloth" and then she eats it! I will try the towels - maybe she will not eat them. Thank you for all the advice and now I know I am not the only one with a digging fanatic Guinea Pig.

Re: Bedding? fleece?

What I have is, chloroplast, then carpet on top of that then, cotton blankets and towels on that and then my fleeces. and it is really soft with the carpet in there.

Re: Bedding? fleece?

Yes two of my girls are burrowers in the EXTREME. Somehow they managed to dig "around" my layer of bricks and find their way UNDER the fleece so I just said OK ladies I can clean under the fleece as well as on top of it But hopefully in the new C&C cage I should have in 2 weeks (my builder is taking his time making my 3x6) I will have clips over the sides that prevent that behavior OR just give IN when they manage to burrow anyway and do more cleaning

Re: Bedding? fleece?

neither of my piggies burrow but i thought if you have a c&c cage why no get another bit of coroplast that fits inside the main box and put the grippy side of velcro on it. it would have to be sticky backed velcro and then stick the fleece to it. or for extra burrow stoppage you could stitch the soft side of velcro on the fleece so it doesn't come off in the wash. it might make the sides of the floor slanty but if you do it just right, not pulling it tight or anything you might be well off. We're giving it a try just so the bedding doesnt shift because our little one loves to run laps, banks her corners and everything so it might be good for non readjustment. If anyone tries it let us know.
