Before coming to this website I had not heard of using fleece for my Guinea pigs. Why do you use fleece? Why is it recommended? Currently, I use Newspaper, then aspen, then hay. Is this recommended? (Why or why not?). How do you clean the fleece? I know if I put fleece down, my guinea would just pee all over it! Thanks! |

Hay and newspaper are not good bedding because they are not absorbent. Aspen is fine. |

Here's a general tip for newbies, read all if not most of the stickies. Besides, since when is hay that pokes you comfortable to sleep in every night? Good luck... |

I know! Sorry! This post wasn't meant to be made, as I discovered the fleece thread... as I am a probie I can't respond to my own threads straight away without having my posts 'acknowledged'. Otherwise I would have told you all to ignore it Sorry for the confusion. |

What you are using is ok, the only issue is that their urine will make the hay go moldy so will have to be changed every day. I love fleece, it has made my life so much easier. Basically, fleece wicks their urine through to the absorbent layers underneath. In my case I use 4 or 5 layers of towels. Cleaning is simple, I just roll everything up and shake it out. Then I dump it into the washing machine with a cup of vinegar and hang it out on the line to dry. I have two full sets for each cage so that I don't have to wait for one to dry. I also have a "kitchen area" which consists of a litter pan made of corflute that fits in a 1x2 section. I fill it with 100% recycled kitty litter. I have their pellet bowl, hay rack and water bottle in this section. As it is a section they are predominately in, they tend to go to the toilet a lot here. Therefore I spot clean it daily to remove any soiled sections, and do a full clean of it once a week when I clean the fleece bit of their cage. This seems to lengthen the time I can go between cleans. |
