Fleece for layer one but what else?

Fleece sounds great to use but I was wondering what the mattress pads were I've heard about. I have two chinchillas and a soon to be hedgehog then probably a guinea pig =]. I have started my first two C&C cages but how does the fleece bedding work? Do you just wash it and how often? What are the other layers because I will be making alot of this for three large cages and need to know what to start buying. Thanks .

You could have asked that in your other post about reuseable bedding as it pertains to that also.

The Rich Cotton Mattress pad covers can be found in the bedding section of Walmart usually by the pillows and they go on the mattress under the sheets.

You really should read this http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...ect-study.html as it will answer many of you questions and if you get a king size Rich Cotton Mattress pad then you only need to get fleece and sew these two things together and it works really good.

I used the search function for you. In addition to the Fleece Project Sticky that's already been linked, here's some more information:

Re: Fleece for layer one but what else?

Actually I have read a couple like the fleece project study and such but I didnt know what the mattress pad was... I wanted to know what other things people had used for the middle layer some said cotton but I didnt know if that would wash well and become clumps.

Re: Fleece for layer one but what else?

Under the fleece you need an absorbent layer so the urine can wick thru. An absorbent layer consists of towels, beach towels, and mattress pads. Every week i wash and dry the fleece. In the washer i use a non-softener detergent which is perfume and dye free and in the dryer i don't put any dryer sheets in because fabric softeners will make it so the urine does not wick thru the fleece properly. I personally use two layers of beach towels and they work great. I also have a litter box area where the litter box is and the hay so when the eat the hay, most of the poos go in there and i clean it out every 3 days. Make sure the chinchillas have their own cage, same with the guinea pig and hedgehog as you cannot put them together. I also suggest getting another piggie for a friend since pigs are social animals and require a friend to be happy and healthy.

I like using fleece because it is not smelly (unless you don't clean it often enough or have enough absorbent layers) and you don't have to worry about bedding getting all over the place. The only time i use a little bit of Aspen bedding is in the litter box.
