Urine Stains

I started using fleece for one day because I heard it was really good. But after one day they stained it with their urine. It was all brown and stuff.

It also smelled bad after just one day. And I put it in at night. I vacuumed and everything before I went to sleep. But its just disgusting. I switched back to my old bedding now but I am considering to use the extra cut of fleece to try again.

Any tips?

Re: Urine Stains

Did you use any layers underneath? Like towels or a mattress pad? It is important to have some absorbent under layers as the fleece will wick the urine from the top to the absorbent layer.

And what color fleece are you using? I prefer a pattern as it kinda camouflages everything! haha!

I also keep a litter box in the cage that has hay and a food dish so they primarily go there.

Re: Urine Stains

pigs mark their territory (whether male or female) so it smells for a while, but once they get used to it they stop marking until you wash it (which I do every 5 days).

I used to think it was hard work and smelled too but leave it for a few days and just pick up poop and you should be ok. Use a couple of layers below the fleece (I use newspaper then towel)

The stains are normal- so long as it isn't gritty or red it's ok. grit indicates too much calcium (and possibly stones) and red/ brown could be blood (UTI). i have cream fleece, it doesn't stain too bad. I now find it WAY easier.

Re: Urine Stains

Yea I used puppy pads that my dog barely went on. Yea it sounds disgusting. xD

I used a light blue. That's probably why the fleece is all stained. D:

I can't fit a lot of stuff because my mom won't get us a C&C cage. I'm planning to ask if we can make one out of closet maid shelving. :P

I don't really know about the urine color stains though. It was a little brown but thats all.

The urine couldn't be dried blood because usually when they both pee on my hardwood floor (D It's just regular.

I'm planning to use the remaining fleece to make a cozy soon. I actually like using the bedding I used before better. It makes it smell nice for more than like 1 week. And it makes them smell awesome. :]

Re: Urine Stains

If you're using fleece in a pet store cage, it isn't going to work very well. You're going to have to change it at least twice a day.

Re: Urine Stains

Actually, T&H, closet sheving makes an excellent cage. It gives you more options on size, is sturdy and the "lip" makes putting a top on easier. There are some really great picures of shelving cages in the photo gallery.
