Hi: I have been using fleece for quite a while now and love it. Just recently made 2 sets of fleece pads with a layer of fleece on top and two layers of towels on the bottom, all sewn together. I line the coroplast with puppy pads and it all works well. I have more fleece and wanted to make more pads but instead of towels (which were hard to sew through) perhaps use mattress pads. Are they absorbent enough? I have noted the ones I have looked at are polyester fill. Will the polyester absorb well? Currently I change out the cage every three days, but as the boys get older they have become stinkier (alas they cannot be potty trained and will pee over every inch of the fleece) and would like to have enough "pads" sewn that I can change them out every day and do a wash every 3 days or so. What about throwing flannel in the mix? |

Flannel would not be good as a top layer as it doesn't allow the urine to seep through, You can use cotton blankets and the Matress cover for the back. Top layer fleece, middle cotton blanket (cheap $4.99 at walmart) and bottom layer (back) Matress cover and of course you cut to size and sew it all together. If you can find a cotton matress cover then you don't nee the cotten blanket. |

I've sewn my fleece to flannel bed sheet (middle layer) then mattress pad (bottom layer). I line the whole cage with disposable incontinence pad as a back up. This setup has worked well for me so far. |

I am still going to use the fleece as the top. It is the middle layers, the abslorbent ones I am trying to figure out. I want to make it lighter, and I know they use cotton flennellette for cloth diapers. Perhaps i willuse the flannel and mattress pad sewn with fleece on top. Perhaps a trip to value village to see if they ahve mattress pads. |

We bought a "cotton rich" mattress pad at Wal-mart in king-size and cut it up. We sewed our fleece on top of it and it works great for us! I got the idea from this forum. |

I've looked at the material of Walmart's cotton rich mattress pads and the top is made of poly-cotton blend. I wonder how much it can absorb. How often do you have to change it? |

We have two female pigs in a 2x5 cage and we change the bedding weekly. We used some of the remnants to make smaller pads to put in eating and sleeping areas. |

I do have a couple of pads with an extra layer of bamboo batting, so it goes fleece, batting, mattress pad. They was very very well. I have 3 changes worth. I can go 2-3 days between washes. I do have 2 condos that I use these piggy pads in, so when I clean, it's a full load of laundry and I dont' have to run teh pads with any of our human things. |
