Found a favorite litter box bedding

I have tried a bunch of different litters in my kitchen areas and I have settled on Yesterday's news. It doesn't track, doesn't smell like a barnyard when wet and lasts several days before I have to change it out.

I am finishing up a bag of the carefresh ultra and that stuff tracks terribly! It gets on the lovely texel's undersides and then drags all over, It also sticks to fleece and is a pain to get off. YN just vacuums or shakes right off no problem.

So that's what I've settled on for now.

Re: Found a favorite litter box bedding

I love Yesterday's News. That's what I use in my litter boxes under the hay racks. It doesn't smell at all and like you said doesn't track everywhere.

I love that stuff! I buy it in bulk and the pigs like it too! It's very good at hiding that pee smell.

Re: Found a favorite litter box bedding

Yay! Glad to see it works well for others too

I wish I could find it in bulk around here. When I was near a petco I'd get the big 30lb bags for around $16 but here in this little town it's either kmart for 6 bucks a 13.2lb bag or 5 bucks at hyvee for the same size. I usually hit up the cheaper one and if they're out, I go to kmart (which I had to do today). wonder if hyvee would order me a giant bag or two of YN... hmmm.

I actually got it at petco you can ask for the biggest size and it lasts forever, I've been working on the same bag since febuary. or you could find a website that sells it in large quantities that could ship it to you.it lasts a lot longer than other bedding so you won't use it to quikly.

Re: Found a favorite litter box bedding

Just checked a bunch of online places and even with the big bags being on sale, once you add the shipping, it's twice the cost per pound of me going and purchasing the smaller bags here.
I'll just buy 2 at a time.

Good idea, I'm sure your texel will appreciate it

I use YN for my ferret's litterbox...never thought to use it for my piggies. Where can you buy it in bulk? And how big a bag is bulk? I get a big bag at Petsmart for about $16...I'd have to check what size, but I think it's 20lbs.

Re: Found a favorite litter box bedding

Do you line the litter box or kitchen area with newspaper or paper towel before putting in YN? I've used YN before and liked the fact that they don't track onto fleece much but when it's wet, the bottom part kinda get stuck to the litter box.

Re: Found a favorite litter box bedding

I don't line it with anything, just scoop the wet areas with a mini dust pan and it scrapes it right off the bottom no problem.

Re: Found a favorite litter box bedding

I don't think I can recall reading so many positive remarks about Yesterday's News in one thread before. Maybe we'll start trying that instead of carefresh. Does it get really mushy like Carefresh can?

Re: Found a favorite litter box bedding

It doesn't get mushy. It all get absorbed on the bottom and when you dump it the wet part can clump but I just give it a light tap and it all falls out. It works great and its good at absorbing odors.

Re: Found a favorite litter box bedding

Ok now I'm going to have to try this. Maybe it will last longer than the carefresh, I'm looking to trying to get to changing the litter box less frequently, using less bedding material and just refreshing the grass/hay on top every day.

Re: Found a favorite litter box bedding

I love this stuff, too. I put Carefresh Ultra over it since it doesn't seem very comfortable to walk on, but it lasts much longer than Carefresh Ultra alone! (I don't have much of a tracking problem since I have a fiddlestick bridge to get in and out of the litter box).

Re: Found a favorite litter box bedding

I bought a bag of yesterdays news because I wanted to try it out. However, I haven't used it yet...it looks just like pellets and I am worried my pigs might try to eat it. Anyone ever had that problem?

Mine have tasted it but it's non-toxic. Good luck.

My Lola eats anything in her path and she has eaten some of it, which is another reason why I cover it with Carefresh. But it's non-toxic

Re: Found a favorite litter box bedding

I have used YN for years with my cats and rats; it doesn't track as mentioned above, but also has low dust (good for young, old and post surgical), hypoallergenic (unlike shavings) and VERY absorbent! Especially good for odour control. I was glad to hear that guinea pigs tolerate it well as I get a balk discount for it!

Re: Found a favorite litter box bedding

I don't buy bulk bags, I buy the large (30lb) bags in bulk (10-20 at a time). I just asked the local pet store (ren's pet depot) if they had a discount and they made one for me. I pay 15$ (CAN) -10%. I store the bags in the basement. It gets split between 2 people for our cats (and now the pigs). It never hurts to ask!
