Re: Convert to Fleece?

I use empty Kleenex boxes for hay boxes. I have to replace it once it gets too chewed up to hold hay, but it usually lasts for a good month or so for me. Whether that works will depend on your pig. I've had pigs who just use the box as a toy and pull all the hay out of it, but my current pig is a good girl and just pulls out what she eats.

Re: Convert to Fleece?

I might try that! Thanks! I also might experiment with using like a Coke box or something! Thanks for the idea!

Re: Convert to Fleece?

Would 2 layers of towels and then the fleece work? I told my mom how all you have to do is put a few layers of towels then the fleece. Her reaction: "Wow! that sounds cheap! Ok!" I really want to get this right and prove to her it will work!

Re: Convert to Fleece?

2 layers should work fine. Also, I get my towels from the Goodwill store so they are only $1 a piece. I have enough for 2 changes so I don't have to wait to wash to be able to put new fleece and towels in the cage. It is really easy to roll up, shake outside and wash. Best way to go in my opinion and there is no smell at all (I am a 35 y.o. mom and very picky about smells!)

Re: Convert to Fleece?

Yeah we might go to Goodwill and get enough for 2 changes. Do you do the "Vacuum-Shake-Brush-Beat" cycle thing?

Re: Convert to Fleece?

It shouldn't if you clean it properly. Read the stickies at the top of the bedding page. The fleece wicks her pee to the under layer of something absorbent. This could be a combination of newspaper, towels, mattress pads, or puppy training pads. We have had a little family emergency so I haven't transferred yet. I will let you know what I think of it though!

As wheekers said you need a layer (or several layers) of something absorbent under the fleece to wick the moisture away from the pigs. You'll need to clear the poops off the poops twice a day with either a vacuum or a scoop or a dustpan and brush. At least once a week everything should be shaken out and washed.

For those of you that only have one pig (I have a 2x3 cage if it matters) what has worked the best as an under bedding?

I have checked with my mom and she said that as long as I clean it and all then it won't matter! Since you shake it before you put it in the washer/dryer, poos and hay won't get stuck in it right?

Go to your nearest CVS/Pharmacy, Rite-Aid, or Walgreen's and pick up some generic Super Large adult incontinence pads. (Located next to the Depends and Serenity undergarments.) They're inexpensive, and in some states they're NON-taxable which is awesome.

Re: Convert to Fleece?

Thanks! So I told my mom to wash the fleece 3-4 times and dry also. She washed, dried in dryer, washed, hung it on the line, washed, hung it on the line. Will it still work? We didn't use any softener. Thanks!

Re: Convert to Fleece?

I have a rotation of fabric bedding, half the week its a fleece blanket and te other half its a flannel twin bed sheet. i find that the flannel is way more absorbant and doesn't ball up after a few washes, its also large enough to use in a larger cage.

Flannel is not good for top layer. When it gets wet, it stays wet. Do you use anything under your fleece? Make sure you do, fleece is not suppose to absorb, it should let water go through to whatever you have underneath. You can use flannel as an underlayer if you'd like. I use 1 layer of mattress pad (sewn to fleece) with 1 layer of disposable incontinence pads.

This is where I got incontinence pads. It's quite cheap. I got free delivery too. 100 pads for $27 ($22.95 if you choose subscription).
Amazon.com: Prevail Underpad, Super Absorbent, 10 Underpads (Pack of 10): Health & Personal Care
I have a 2x6 cage and use aout 4 per week. Sometimes it's not even wet because the mattress pad absorbed all the urine. I just like to have it as a backup.

Yes it should. In between uses you now only have to wash it once. As you use it more, it will wick better, so if i'ts not perfect at first don't worry.
