Question Pine Shavings okay for piggie to eat?

I have some pine kiln dried shavings that I have been using along with the carefresh bedding. My piggie is a very bad chewer and he has been chewing on/eating the shavings. I have chewing toys in there for him, but he still chews on everything.

I am planning on switching to the fleece bedding, but in the meantime is it okay that he chews on/eats these? I removed these from the cage just in case.

They shouldn't be eating any kind of bedding. It's not good for them. He could end up with intestinal blockage which requires surgery. It's a good thing you removed them.

Do you have hay for him to chew on?

Does he have unlimited grass hay to chew on?

Edit: Wow.. akstrohm asked the same question at the same time. I was a bit slower

Re: Pine Shavings okay for piggie to eat?

At the moment, no hay. None of the stores close to me sell any, and the one that does was out when I went. I have been giving him grass in the meantime and he has chew sticks.

I have switched over to fleece (he and I both LOVE it!), so the shaving issue is no more.

I am going to look into ordering the hay off the internet since I can't find any near me.

Have you looked at farm stores? Here's what I found on Google when I typed in "hay near Tennessee"

Re: Pine Shavings okay for piggie to eat?

Chew sticks are usually ignored. They need hay at all times. It may be why he is eating the shavings.

For roughage.

There aren't any farms or feed stores near you that sell things for horses?

They usually sell hay by the bales.

Re: Pine Shavings okay for piggie to eat?

Chew sticks won't help. He needs unlimited grass hay 24/7. It is not a treat; it is an essential part of his diet. It also plays a critical role in wearing down teeth. Once you get him hay, the chewing is likely to get better. If you can't find a pet store or feed store near you that sells it, it is available online. KM is a great choice.

Re: Pine Shavings okay for piggie to eat?

Duh. Lol. I have a Co-op in my town (never even crossed my mind) I will go check it out and see what they have and I found a Tractor Supply Store 30 minutes from me, and I am pretty sure they have some. I am on my way to go check these places out!

Thank you to everyone for your help and information!

Jasper_Hale- I have only one right now, a male named Chomper (I know that pairs are recommended, but for the moment that is not possible.)
