Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 When I first got my two piggies, I used Aspen. But after I cleaned their cage about five times (in five weeks of having them), my mom told me that It was too expensive to buy the $16 - $17 bedding twice a month (because I have 2 hamsters, a rat and a rabbit that used it at the time), so I used straw with newspaper the next time, but the next morning I woke up to a horrible pee smell coming from their cage, and when I picked one of them up she smelled too ! So then I bought a potty pan for them to use, but no matter what I do they will not use it. So now I have torn up newspaper in there, but of course no one in my family lets me keep my bedroom door open because of it. Can anybody give any suggestions? |

If you have enough newspaper, you can make your own CareFresh. There's a thread about it over on Guinea Lynx. Guinea Lynx :: Topic - Make Your Own Litter! Or you could always use fleece. |

Straw and newspaper is not absorbent. You really need to add some sort of bedding. Fleece is an option. You can buy cheaper shavings at most feed stores. Often the aspen is cheaper there too. |

But won't guinea pigs chew the fleece? As my post what is safe bedding is the same thing I am looking for some bedding that is safe for my piggys as one of my piggies has a delicate tummy and red pads. I will keep an eye on this thread as no one has answered in mine to see what suggestions you get. If you get some bedding and your piggies like it let me know please. |

I have been using fleece for the past couple of weeks as a bedding and I have used it to make cozies, a hammock and a cuddle cup. I havn't noticed any chewing. My two boys definately prefur it and sulked when I went back to shavings for a couple of days. I also have had no problems with smell |

Do you really need something absorbent? I was thinking of just using those woodchips at the playground in the park because that would be free and guinea pigs like wood so they could chew on it too. Well, I guess wood does absorb water and stuff. How can I prevent maggots from thriving in the poop dish? It's really getting to be a chore to clean it. |

Once I forgot to throw away the guinea pig trash for 2 weeks. I never found maggots. Also, playground mulch? Are you kidding me? Kids urinate in this, and dogs crap on it. Quote:

It's very rare for a pig to chew on fleece. It's a very safe and healthy bedding option. |
