Hay getting strown in the cage & litter box training

How do you guys deal with the hay you give your cavies getting spread out of the pile you put it in and therefore mixing with the litter in your cage, thus making your cavy going to the bathroom on the hay contaminating it? I can't use fleece because we don't have a washing machine to wash it every day and I don't have a source for it that I know of anyway.I have no clue what to do. I'd also be interested in knowing about 'litter box training'....how do you do that?

Re: Hay getting strown in the cage & litter box training

I got a little bin from the dollar store, small stackable type. They have a shallow front so the pigs can get in, and I put the hay in there, no mess. As for a litter box, I have small cat box ( not used before) cut an opening and fill it with what ever litter you use, put it in the corner they use most. They will still poop everywhere else, the box is used mostly for pee. Mine like to go in their hay box anyway, so I go through more hay than litter.

Why not make a few fleece bedding pieces so when you have to wash one you can put down the other?

Re: Hay getting strown in the cage & litter box training

Right after I posted I got with hubby to see what we could do.....he build a 'hay loft' out of bailing wire on one corner of the cage. There's still hay on the floor of the cage, but I'm hoping soon that they figure out they can pick pieces from that loft that they will. If this doesn't work that caddy idea is a good one as long as I can get to a dollar store

I got mine from Wal-Mart in the fabric section.

Re: Hay getting strown in the cage & litter box training

You can get fleece at wal-mart like emox said, or any fabric store. You can also find fleece blankets at numerous stores and use them. Also, you don't have to wash the fleece daily. I take mine out and do a complete wash once a week. Just sweep up the poops daily and you'l have no problems.

But remember to put absorbant layers under the fleece if you decide to use it!

Re: Hay getting strown in the cage & litter box training

Hubby built them a hay loft to solve our problem and also put coro around 3 sides of the cage to prevent them from kicking litter out. It'll take some getting used to for me cuz their cage is right beside my computer and I'm used to being able to see them from the back without having to go around to the side, but I'll get used to it. Here are a couple pics of it.

Here's the loft

And here's a pic of Butterscotch reaching up for hay from it so I know it works!
