We are new to Piggies

Hi Everyone,

We are new to guinea pigs. I am a mum and have two children 6 & 9 who have been hounding me for guinea pigs for months. I finally relented!! We built a C&C cage which has turned out great. We got the grids from a dollar shop that was closing down - $10 for 20. We got got the corplast from a tile place (one of the posts here said that tile companies use corplast between layers of tiles - that was a good tip!). All up the cage cost us less than $40. We have sawdust in the base with newspaper at the moment but I am considering going to fleece. We got the piggies from Pets Paradise at Eastgardens - their names are Pinky (pink eyes) and Sandy. They are both female. The kids love them and want to pick them up and hold them all the time. I find they poo everywhere!!! and I was most probably spend half my life picking up their little poos! Anyway, I will post again. We are in Sydney - Sylvania.

Re: We are new to Piggies

Welcome to the forum and welcome to the honourable title of "Cavy Slave," as you will be now until they (they meaning, Sandy and Pinkie) cross the rainbow bridge. I love the names!

As for the poops, I made a cuddle cup following the instructions on another thread, I find that when I am cuddling my girls and using the cuddle cup, all of their poops get collected at the bottom. It is a cheap and effective poop collector! For me, it took under 30 minutes, but you will need a sewing machine:

Have fun!

Re: We are new to Piggies

I have had my 2 piggies for a few months. I was keen to potty train them (as had read it was possible). So I bought 2 corner trays (triangular shaped, with a high back) which sits in the corner of the hutch. (One for each level of my 2-storey hutch). I use Coles recycled newspaper kitty litter. My 2 piggies poop and pee in there 95% of the time. You just need to grab the tray, tip it all out, and refill with litter - too easy. I use a dustbuster for the other bits that may get scattered in their home. You may want to encourage your kids how to use the dustbuster for the couch, carpet, etc etc. ...employ as many helpers as you can - hehe!!!
