Hutch Lining

Hello everyone..
Just wanting to know what everyone uses to line the bottom of their piggers' hutches (specifically the plastic trays in the bottom of the c&c hutches).
Also, where to get these supplies from...

Re: Hutch Lining

Chloroplast is what I have as the plastic tray in my cage. You can get a sheet of it from most sign shops, and just cut it to whatever size you need.

Re: Hutch Lining

Hey thanks, heatherbunnie.

Chloroplast is American, or so my Mum tells me. The Australian version is called corflute, which I assume is the same as Chloroplast. I have organised to get corflute from a shop in my town.

But what i meant was, what sort of lining does everyone use for inside the tray.
I am leaning towards recycled paper in the form of pellets or in some other form. Does anyone have any better ideas? Preferably inexpensive as I have alot of area to use it on

Re: Hutch Lining

I use wood shavings, which are pretty cheap. A package of it that costs $5 lasts me 3-4 months. A lot of people use fleece. If you do a search in the forum for fleece, shavings, etc you'll find lots of info about each kind.

Re: Hutch Lining

In Australia, generally there is two types of shavings you can use, Hysorb, and Breeders Choice. The Breeders choice is slightly more expensive but WELL worth it.

For smaller cages ie more expensive, any of the paper based kitty litters, Dr Harry's, Breeders Choice paper pellets, etc.

Another popular one, Heather has mentioned is fleece, this is known as polar fleece here, and with towels or absorbent layers under is very effective.

Re: Hutch Lining

Oh yeah, I keep forgetting about the fleece thanks =)
Fleece would be very good to use in winter (not only for piggers but also in our own beds I want to make a polar fleece fitted sheet for my bed )

Re: Hutch Lining

I have two c&c cages and one large pet store cage. I have at the bottom i layer about 1cm thick of pine shavings, then two layers of newspaper and lastly about 10 to 15cm of newspaper that has taken a trip through the mulcher, [one of those things that you would normally put branches in and get wood chips out].
The piggies are kept warm and dry and have lots of fun piling up and digging through the newspaper mulch.
