Unhappy FOUND / ADOPTION : Guinea Pig and Rabbit [Thornleigh - Sydney Region]

A Guinea Pig and Rabbit were left in a cardboard box at our local Vet's office since morning of 28 Dec '06.

We are fostering the lovely pair until we find their owner.

If they are not claimed by 5 Jan '07, they will be up for adoption.
We love to keep them but we are committed to 3 guinea pigs and a Budgie.

Please note:

1. Gender
Both males. Most likely in their infant stage [testicles have yet dropped, according to the Vet]

2. Breed
Guinea pig: most probably a crested tri-colour sheltie / coronet.
Rabbit: not sure, he's got big feet !

3. Health check / screen
Our local Vet has checked through the pair and found them healthy.
Both guinea pig and rabbit are very alert and curious about almost everything !

4. Companion
They need a good and loving home with lots of TLC and companion.
The pair is not a pre-Christmas / post-Easter present as playthings for Children, neither are they to be used for breeding purposes. You must be prepared to look after them for life if you are adopting them *that is assuming their owner does not come forward to take them home*

5. Lost & Found / Adoption ad
I've also posted this on respective Australian [mostly Sydney region] sites.
Apologies if this shouldn't be posted under this category.

Re: FOUND / ADOPTION : Guinea Pig and Rabbit [Thornleigh - Sydney Region]

Please don't keep them together, rabbits and guinea pigs are NOT suppose to be together.
Please read this link,
http://www.guineapigcages.com/rabbits.htm

Quote:
Even the smallest dwarf rabbit can pose a physical danger to a guinea pig, especially if space is limited. Rabbits often kick or stomp with their powerful hind feet when they are expressing their emotions. Whether a rabbit is jumping for joy or thumping out of annoyance, a guinea pig stands a good chance of getting hurt. This is not as uncommon as you might think. Rescuers and other concerned animal welfarists often encounter guinea pigs whose legs have been broken after being caged in a pet store with a rabbit. Such injuries often require surgery and a lifetime regimen of anti-inflammatory medication.
Quote:
Most animals carry organisms which are not harmful to them but which can be fatal to other species. In the case of rabbits, a very common bacteria found in their respiratory tract is Pasteurella. While antibiotic treatments can control this disease, it often lingers on in a carrier state and requires occasional treatment. Rabbits can live a long life as carriers of Pasteurella and not even show any symptoms. However, guinea pigs are highly susceptible to respiratory infections, and their fragile immune system is not equipped to battle this pathogen. If exposed to Pasteurella, a guinea pig is many times more likely than a rabbit to succumb to the organism and die. It is a chance that not many of us would like to take with our beloved pets.

Yes, we are aware of that, thanks for the reminder.

We are also keeping the pair separate from our pets to quarantine them for the moment.

Re: FOUND / ADOPTION : Guinea Pig and Rabbit [Thornleigh - Sydney Region]

Awww arn't the pair lovely do they get along well and did they come in together or did they come in separately???

If you like it's completely up to you but if you wanted I'm happy to pop them up on the ACS website on our main news/index page to see if we could get them rehomed through their??? A lady recently tried to rehome four piggies on the gold coast through the website and they got a few enquiries and the piggies are pretty much rehomed now....?
Up to you but I'm willing to put them up with photos and any info you'd like?

SECTION 1 Title 1 Title 2 Title 3 although you probably know the address already...

Good luck with them! If worse comes to worse I'm not sure if you know but we now have a wollongong shelter ( details are on the webby ) and Liss I'm sure would be more than happy to pick up or have the pair delivered so they could be adopted out through strict screening/adoption process.

Jess

They are both beautiful! It shouldn't be hard to find homes for them with those faces.

Think they were together when the Vet office received them in the cardboard box. I have a feeling whoever who owned them before, probably bought them at the same time from a pet shop. I think by law the Vets are not supposed to keep lost and found pets for more than a day - and he has no heart to put them down. So I'm fostering them until we find them a home.

They both got along really well, surprisingly. I let them out on the deck [supervised off course] for a little run so that they can have a bit of an exercise and they seem to play along fine. And several times I've witness the rabbit grooming the guinea pig.

That's a superb idea ! I vaguely remember an Australia cavy forum site which I've joined but I can't find the URL after searching about for a couple of days. Thank you so much !

I'll give it a go shortly and if my post isn't successful, I may have to trouble you to upload the photos and an ad on the lovely pair's behalf !

Yes, I'll need all the luck I can have now !
I'll keep this in mind - definitely will need some expert help in screening / adoption process if luck runs out on this end !

Thank you so much Jess, your response has been most helpful !

But the rabbit could get spooked at any point and accidental kick the guinea pig, and while they where supervised there is still a chance the rabbit spread a Pasteurella to the guinea pig.
Not trying to be mean, just trying to look out for the guinea pig.
They are both adorable by the way.

Understood. Rest assure, rabbit and guinea pig are both taken care of the best we can until we find them a home to go to.

I've seen rabbit kick and punch [not this one by the way in case you got all worried again] so I'm aware of the potential damage the rabbit can do to a guinea pig when housed together.
