Looking to adopt a neutered male for our herd!

Hello piggie friends! We are looking to adopt a neutered male to head our herd of five unspayed females. Our sweet boar recently crossed the rainbow bridge unexpectedly and now our herd has no king. We live in PA but can drive to surrounding areas (MD, DC, VA, NJ, DE, etc) if the right guy comes along. If anybody knows of a lonely boy that needs rehoming please get in touch. Cheers.

If you have a good exotic vet in your area you could adopt an unaltered male and have him neutered. I'm sure there are lots of males up for adoption in your area.

We have a good exotic vet, who performed a neuter on our beloved boar, but sadly there were some post-op complications and he died. So we are now looking for a male who has already successfully gone through the neutering procedure...we can't go through that pain again!!

I'm so sorry to hear about that. What kind of complications did he have?

He got a post-op infection at the incision site...seemed minor, vet put him on Baytril ASAP...first dose was taken without incident, but soon after his second dose he just went downhill very quickly. He abruptly stopped eating and drinking, and despite all efforts to syringe feed and hyrdrate him overnight he died early in the morning in my arms just as we were ready to take him back to the vet. We're still not quite sure what happened...best guess is a bad/allergic reaction to the antibiotic itself. We knew there were risks to any neuter surgery, even with a good vet, but we just weren't prepared to be one of the minority statistics. The kids and I are still heartbroken over it.

I had my male neutered last May and my vet did not prescribe an antibiotic after the surgery. He also developed abscesses. I didn't even notice it at first. My vet prescribed Baytril and I gave a probiotic with it. I flushed the wounds to keep it clean and he recovered. The most important thing about giving an antibiotic is to also gave them a probiotic with it. Without it, they can stop pooping and develop bloat which can kill them. I can understand your reluctance to go through that again but if you change your mind, there is a lot of excellent information about neutering on here.

We did give probiotic...he just went downhill so suddenly and quickly after that second dose of meds that even though we did everything "right" to try to keep him going it just wasn't enough. I know this outcome is relatively rare, but we still definitely don't want to subject ourselves to the possibility again...it was very hard on the children, and me too (I stayed up with him all night and he passed away snuggled in my arms...I still tear up thinking about it, he was my special buddy!).
Anyway, we know that finding an already-neutered male to our liking will be a task, but we're willing to wait for the right boy to come along. Just wanted to post it out there to better the chances of a connection being made at some point in the future. Cheers.

I don't blame you at all, especially with your kids having to see him go through that. To tell you the truth, the experience was stressful for us, too. If Rigatoni had not made it, I doubt that I would ever consider it again, either. I hope you find that special boy....
