Re: one male needs a home

Please, dont be in such a hurry to get rid of the baby pig, that you would adopt it out to anyone. The fact that you adopted the girls out to be classromm pets, makes me very sad. Classrooms are not appropriate homes for g-pigs. If you care about these babies, and are a responsable person, give them to critter connection, or some place that will screen the adoptors. A parent getting a pig for a child is a bad idea. It needs to be a family pet, that the parents will take care of most of the time. Also, I would advise a home visit, and proof of a CC cage! Please think about the animals, they are not just toys to be tossed where ever they are not a bother to you!

Re: one male needs a home

This is Cindy from the Critter Connection. She brought the little boy to me and he is still here safe and sound. I don't release the babies until they are at least 6 or 7 weeks old and have a very thorough adoption process. If you want to see his photo go to www.critter.petfinder.com. His name is Speaker. He will only be adopted to a home that already has a same sex pig and will definitely not end up as a classroom pet.

Re: one male needs a home

He is a real cutie!

Personally I don't like to jump to conclusions about parents purchasing pets for children. Many parents say the pet is for the child, or belongs to the child, but are in fact themselves the primary caregiver. I know one G.P. rescue that won't adopt to homes that have children, and I think this is a little silly.

Re: one male needs a home

I think some of the people who post here care more about guinea pigs than actual human beings. I don't particularly care what makes you "sad". I think that it is sad that you feel the need to police the world for the good of guinea pigs. I have learned plenty about these animals since we became involved and I did not adopt them out to anyone irresponsible. The teacher happens to run an animal rescue, works in a beautiful private school, has much experience with guinea pigs, and has them housed in a huge cage. You probably wouldn't even let me have these animals because I have four young children. Well, guess what? I have nice, gentle, kids. I am not a moron, I know not to give a two year old any animal to hold on her own. You jump to so many ridiculous conclusions about, young kids, about parents of young kids, about classrooms, etc. I think many people who post here need to stop guessing as to what will make a guinea pig happy. It's a guinea pig!! They deserve to be treated as well as any other animal, but really, get over yourselves!!

Re: one male needs a home

Don't forget to post where you are located for those who wanted to concider adopting.

I got tired of the complaining and ranting too. So, I quit visiting this site as often. There were all kinds of suggestions when I rescued my piggies, but when it came down to helping me find homes for them, only two people stepped up to the plate to help. If you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem.

I think this is a fair statement, only I don't think it is really a bad thing, they just care about the well being of an animal that we "humans" deliberately put into this world and can't defend itself. I know that if I came across a drowning child or a drowning guinea pig in a lake, and I could only save one, I would go for the child. But if you take a human being who has spent the majority of their lives being mean and rotten and self-centered, I just might save the pig!". I am not going to apologize for it.

I don't think it is policing, I think it is passion and genuine caring. Apparently some of us care too much? I think that is nonsense.

I think that it is great that you feel this is a suitable home. It may just be the one exception for guineas in classrooms. It may be just great. If it is a private school then it is possible that there are not 25-40 overly active and noisy children that will scare the poor pig in the class. If the teacher really cares, they may be more like her pets, I know a few teachers that have pets in the class, and I would not say that these pigs are abused or miss treated. However, this is sadly not the case for most pigs in classrooms.

I agree with this. I also have young kids, and know of rescues that would not give me a pig because of the children. However, when you read over the reasons why, when time and time again, these same people have had families adopt and the pigs returned, I think it is understandable.

about classrooms, etc.
I think most here will stand by the classroom as not being the best environment, 99% of guineas in classrooms are not in large enclosures, in a calm environment, or receive the proper daily care. It isn't so much of a conclusion as a reality. Often they are bred on purpose and tossed out at end of year. If this situation is different, it is an abnormality.

I don't think it is guessing. I think a lot of people here know what makes a pig happy. I never believed that my larger cage would make such a difference to my pigs, but it did. Pig body language and behavior is very self explanatory. I don't see how a guinea pig is any less deserving of care then any other animal or human. Indeed, I don't think "its a guinea pig" as in "Its just a guinea pig". Pets are 100% dependent on us, and why is it that we suppose that because we are more "intelligent" or "have a soul" or whatever the dividing line between us and the rest of the animal kingdom, that gives us the right to be treated better?

Re: one male needs a home

I'd just like to add one more thing: there is a chld in my own child's third grade classroom who is allergic to all animals. He can't be around anything with hair, let alone hay and/or shavings. Even the teacher with the best intentions of having a classroom pet would have a problem with that one. This is not a totally uncommon problem, and is one of the other reasons I won't ever adopt out as a classroom pet.

Re: one male needs a home

The mere fact that you would compare saving a drowning child with saving a drowning animal shows how incredibly insane this arguement is.

Re: one male needs a home

Suepooh
As you know, I am involved in rescue of all types of animals. I ran a rescue camp at my shcool last summer, for children. As a teacher, I feel that I can stop the sad growing population of unwanted animals if I teach young children about this issue! Adults just taking care of these poor animals is good but enlightening our children is best. Thank you again for giving my students the chance to be real animal rescuers and responsible pet owners when they grow up...an added note..parents at my school are now also interested in rescue because of you. Thank you again!
