6 Guinea Pigs in Louisiana Shelter

There are now 6 GPs in the New Orleans shelter in need of homes.

There is Reese who I already started a thread about http://cavycages.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8710 Reese is plump and healthy looking. She is MUCH prettier them the picture on the SPCA website.

The 5 new ones are all Abbys. I do not know their ages but none of them look more them a year or two old at most. All 5 of the Abys have either ringworm or Mites which they are being treated for. It doesn't look like they got a very good start at life and REALLY need happy endings. If you are interested please let me know or Call Toni Baker at 504-944-7445 ext 241. I am trying to arrange with the SPCA for me to pull these pigs if I find adopters or possibly if they are in danger of being euthanized.

There are:

3 males
-Rebel (brown and white aby)
-Frankie (brown agouti aby)
-Lenny (orange and white aby)

2 Females
-Babette (black and white aby)
-Hazel (brown and white aby)

Hopefully I will have pictures of these cuties up tomorrow.

Here are the pictures of the adorable sad Guinea Pigs in the New Orleans Japonica St SPCA looking for someone to adopt them. http://www.la-spca.org/adoptions/adoptable_animals.htm

If interested in adoption contact me here on the forum or call Toni Baker at the SPCA diectly at 504-944-7445 ext 241

Other then apparently having mites all of the GPs are in better physical condition then I expected. Their body weight is good, their eyes are clear and when I brought them hay and veggies today they all seemed to have good appetites.

This is Frankie. He’s a brown Agouti Aby with nice whorls and a sweet face.

This is Lenny. He’s an Orange and White Aby. Very sweet.

This one is Rebel. A Brown Agouti and White Aby. He has an adorable face. He only has that one brown spot on his face the other side is all white.

Re: 6 Guinea Pigs in Louisiana Shelter

Here are the Girls.

This is Hazel. She’s a Brown Agouti, Orange and White Aby. I believe she is pregnant and will hopefully foster her until she gives birth and the babies are weaned. An experience home is preferred if she is adopted while pregnant from the SPCA. While I consider her health “good” I fear that her delivery could be difficult due to a poor start in life.

This is sweet Babette. She is a Black and White Agouti. How can you resist her face? While all the GPs are lovely she is the beauty in the group. Babette may also be pregnant and fostered with me at the same time as Hazel

Last is Reese who came in seperatly from this group. She is a short haired Tortoiseshell. VERY pretty. She is in very good health and no mites to be seen. Reese is supposed to get adopted tomorrow but as of now is still available.

Re: 6 Guinea Pigs in Louisiana Shelter

You guys are killing me. I wish I was closer. I was supposed to adopt a fourth girl named Callie but now it doesn't look good. I wish I was closer. I'd love to take in Babette. I'm trying to pair up Angel. My three girls get along but it seems that Angel is the odd wheel at times. Poor girl!! Good luck w/ the adoptions!!

Re: 6 Guinea Pigs in Louisiana Shelter

I'm flying up to The Chicago area on Sept 10th and will be there until the 13th. I may be able to carry her on.

Of course Babette may be pregnant and if so I wouldn't want to adopt her out yet. However, I should be driving up to the Chicago area at Christmas time. I will be passing very close to Springfield at that time. Babette should have had any babies she's carrying by then and should be mite free. It's just 3 months away...something to consider.

Re: 6 Guinea Pigs in Louisiana Shelter

You've definitely sparked an interest. Keep me updated!! I'd like to wait it out and make sure she's not expecting. We just went through that w/ Snowball alittle over a week after we got her and we ended up losing the baby. Very hard on the kids and myself.

Re: 6 Guinea Pigs in Louisiana Shelter

I will keep you updated and first in line for adoption. I'm excited that Babette (my favorite of the bunch) may already have a home.

I am hoping to get to pull the girls from the shelter tomorrow. My first plan of action is to treat for mites and get the girls to the vet to confirm pregnancies.

While these GPs and the rabbits (and any other they get) are at the SPCA I plan to visit daily with hay and veggies. I brough half a bale to the SPCA today. The GPs were thrilled with the hay. Poor little Reese couldn't figure out whether to eat veggies or hay first so she went back and forth between them taking bites.

Hazel and Babette fought over who got to sit on the hay pile. They need a bigger cage, expecially if they are preggers. I'm afraid that in the small cage the SPCA has them in (all the room they can give them unfortunatly) they could get Toxemia. I also got a confirmation that if one of the moms dies during labor the SPCA does not have the manpower to hand raise the babies. With that in mind I am hopeful that they will take me up on my offer to care for them in foster.

Re: 6 Guinea Pigs in Louisiana Shelter

Ok just keep me updated. Good luck. I have a question for you. If I get a piggie from you or someone else on this forum that runs a rescue, do you still recommend to have them quarantined for a few weeks? Just checking since everyone recommends to quarantine to see if the piggie is ill but if you've already treated for mites and foster them for awhile...just curious. Thanks! I've also contacted a lady in Decatur who helps w/ the Critter Coral in Chicago but I haven't heard from her. If things change, I'll let you know. I'm already planning on expanding to a 2x6 (its 2x5 now) cage on the bottom and adding a small third level. The girls need their room.

Re: 6 Guinea Pigs in Louisiana Shelter

It depends on the circomstances of the rescue. If all I have in my home are my 3 girls and Hazel, Babette and any babies and none of them have been introduced to outside animals, and they are healthy a full quarentine can be avoided. But if it's a regular rescue/shelter where animals are coming and going and disease could be spread then a quarentine is necessary.

Such as, If you were to take Babette now a full Q would be in order. If the other adoption doesn't work out and you take Babette at Christmas...and she is with me that whole time with no other Foster Pigs coming in the home them no Q is necessarily needed.

When I adopted Lil Ly from Ly I was able to avoid a Q myself. All of Ly's pigs were healthy and no outside animals were introduced either in Ly's home or during transport. Therefore after a few days alone to get used to the sights, smells and look of my home and of my other GPs across the bars Lil Ly was able to go right in with them.

Re: 6 Guinea Pigs in Louisiana Shelter

Sounds good. You keep me updated and I'll keep you updated. I did mention to my husband about 3 more, just to see what he'd say. He kind of rolled his eyes and said there wasn't enough space. I replied, "But I can go up w/ the cage." TeeHee! I'll keep working on him too. That way if Callie comes through (the one that the girl wasn't sure she wanted to keep but I highly doubt it does) and if Dianna gets back w/ me and Babette. There ya go a half dozen. And I've reached my max. I've found a really good vet that doesn't cost an arm and a leg so we have that covered. Thanks and I'll be looking forward to hearing from you!!

Re: 6 Guinea Pigs in Louisiana Shelter

I should know on Monday if I get to foster Hazel and Babette. My hubby has agreed to the fostering and I have explained to my children that we cannot keep the moms or babies if we do get to foster them.

Keep your fingers crossed that they allow me to look after these little girls.

Re: 6 Guinea Pigs in Louisiana Shelter

Good luck to you! I hope that you do get to foster them. It will be so much better for mother and babies. I know that sometimes shelters may adopt out preg females. I would hate for that to happen. I wish I were closer to you, I would love to help. I just finished a foster of two boys I had here (the shelter wanted them to be at the shelter for viewing, I helped to socialize them).
I do get to come to NewOrleans for my vacation in april! First time that I have been there! I am excited. Kudos to you, for helping out with those piggies! :0)

Re: 6 Guinea Pigs in Louisiana Shelter

I hope they let you foster them. I'd hate for them to be in such a loud and scary environment. Keep me updated and let me know what you find out about Babette. You can PM me if you want. I hope they all find good homes!!

Re: 6 Guinea Pigs in Louisiana Shelter

Rebel and Reese were adopted into seperate homes! Rebel will be continuing his mite treatments and Reese's new owner has been told of the symptoms to watch out for if in case she caught the other GPs' mites.

Both GPs went home with Guinea Lynx Care Pamphlets and the shelter has my number to give to the adoptors so if in case they need help in learning to care for their piggies, cutting nails or building them their big cages.

Here's wishing the babies lots of love in their new homes and their owners lots of joy with their new friends.

Re: 6 Guinea Pigs in Louisiana Shelter

YEAH!!! I'm so glad they were adopted to good homes. We're looking forward to seeing Babette (AKA: Baby). The kids and I are looking forward to our new arrival. We just need to expand our cage and decide when we want to get her. Let me know if you get to foster her tomorrow. Thanks!!

Re: 6 Guinea Pigs in Louisiana Shelter

I sure will. The SPCA near me will probably want to call the Quincey SPCA if you decide to adopt her. When that time comes I'll PM you to get all that info to supply to the SPCA.
