Finding good homes for baby piggies

Hi, I'm new to this forum but have visited the cavycage site several times. I've even built a two-tier cage from plans found here.

Well, back in June, we ended up adopting a beautiful white sow that, unfortunately, turned out to be pregnant. Valorie is our 4th/last sow so therefore we are looking for GOOD homes for her 3 little ones. There are 2 boys and one little girl that were born on July 4th. I've started removing them from mom and am sure by the end of this week they will be totally weaned.

Any advice anyone can give me on finding them GOOD homes. (I don't want to find just any homes for them but homes that they will have a happy life at)

Thanks,
Georgia

Re: Finding good homes for baby piggies

We are in North Dakota. I've contacted the Pet Connection (where I got Valorie) and they are willing to take them off my hands. They are a no-kill shelter. But I know they have tons of cats right now and those seem to be of higher priority than piggies. I will have to see what happens. I've been asking people I know that would provide good homes but so far no luck.

Re: Finding good homes for baby piggies

I wouldn't give them to pet connection.
You can post messages on different sites to try to adopt the guinea pig(s) out yourself. This could take anywhere from a few days to months. Please watch out for snake owners and laboratories. Here are a few resources and websites:

http://www.petfinder.org, click on Classifieds

Make sure to seperate the male from all females by the time he's 3 weeks old!!!

How about the member who goes by Fujiko? He/She lives in Fargo and had been interested in Dozer at Allysse's rescue.

Just out of curiosity, Allysse, why is pet connection not a good place? What about www.midwestpetfinder.com ? I just found out about them today.

Re: Finding good homes for baby piggies

Hi, She and I have been in contact and I'm hoping that it works out. She is looking at my baby female which from what I've heard so far looks like a good home for her. )

I've been in contact with the small animal hospital where I carry my piggies for their checkup etc and one of the gals there may take the boys. Cross fingers it all works out. )

Re: Finding good homes for baby piggies

Try posting ads on Hoobly, Craigslist, Domestic Sale, etc. These are heavily visited classifieds and you can screen your potential adopters. I would only give them up to a shelter if you get desperate. Make sure to keep the male separate at 3 weeks of age to prevent accidental pregnancies.

Re: Finding good homes for baby piggies

I've kept the boys away from mom now most of this week. They turned 3 weeks on Monday (they were born on the 4th of July). As of now they are totally weaned other than still crying for mom every now and then. It breaks my heart when they cry like that but I know it is for the best. I've left the daughter in the cage with her and take her out off and on through out the day to give mom a break. DD (short for DareDevil because she was born 1st and 1st to do everything ), will cry while she is seperated but today she seems not as anxious. There is a gal at the local small animal hospital here that is thinking of taking the boys. )

Re: Finding good homes for baby piggies

I'm thrilled to report that Fujiko has given our DD (the baby female) a home. She picked her up yesterday and she is one of the sweetest gals (Fujiko, I mean) so I feel soo much better now.

Now to find as good a home for the boys. I plan to have them neutered next month so that I can put them in the large cage with the girls.

Too funny! That Fujiko can't resist piggers needing home. She must be up to 8 now!
