I am moving across the country in a few weeks and I have 4 male piggies that I am not able to take with me. I live in Omaha Nebraska right now. I would really like to see them go to good homes. Two of them live together and get along great and are very playful. My other two used to live together, but they started fighting a few months ago and i had to seperate them. They are all very good little piggies. If I am not able to find homes for them is a human society okay to take them to? Will they treat them okay? If anyone is interested in taking any of them please reply. I have quite a bit of caging material, they would just need new coroplast. Thanks, Corrin

Re: piggies looking for a home Why aren't you able to take them? Depends on the shelter. Some do not adopt out small animals, so they euthanize upon entry. Some hold them for a period of time. If they do not get adopted within a reasonable amount of time, they may be euthanized. Our definition of reasonable amount of time may differ than theirs. The way they screen varies. Most will hand an animal over to anyone. They don't screen and the adoption fes are lower than the cost of snake food. Some do screen with an application, but even some shelters do not know how to properly care for guinea pigs. There is a limit to the number of gps they will keep usually. If there are others there already, they may put at risk because you turned yours in. They may feed them rabbit pellets and keep them on wire bottom rabbit cages. I'm being honest. Try to exhaust all possibilities. There are not enough good homes or rescues/ shelters will not be overflooded. You can try to find a no kill shelter or guinea pig rescue, but you may have to pay a surrender fee. Have you placed ads at www.cavyrescue.com, www.petfinder.com classifieds and www.gpan.net? and GL placement forums? Last edited by rabbitsncavyluv : 07-12-05 at 12:18 am.

Re: piggies looking for a home I might be able to bring in a female. Do you have a female, or a male, either one.. A male to add with my male, or a female or two to add with my females. I live in St.Louis MO... Which way are you headed? I just figured out it's a 7 hour drive to STL from Omaha, but if you're willing to make the trip or meet me up I might be able to convince my mom to let me adopt a few more- it really depends on what they look like (NOT to me, my mom wanted more variety than we have).. So it's a might..

Re: piggies looking for a home Ruby- you already have eight pigs. I would think that would be a limit for anybody, not to mention a 13 year old.

I know for myself that if I run into a situation where there are pigs that need a home desperately that I would take them in if I can, no matter how many pigs I currently have. |

Re: piggies looking for a home I am headed for California. I think I may have found a home for two of my pigs and i also found a really good shelter in the area too. So hopefully i can find a home for the other two, but if not i think they'll be okay at the shelter. They take really good care of the guinea pigs. The cages were good size and had hay and hidey houses and tunnels. And they were vey well kept. So I think they'll be okay.

Re: piggies looking for a home Your opinion is based on what you can do not what others can do. My grandma would go to the sale every month and buy abused or young horses and train them. By the time I was 13 I was in charge of the care of 5 young horses as well as the small pets I chose to have, feeding the cats, and our 4 guinea pigs. I don't think 8 pigs is a maximum at all. I have 7 and find them to be little care or cost. Even with part time college and taking care of all the horses that are now mine. The only reason I don't have 10 plus guinea pigs is I moved into an apartment with my boyfriend 20mins away from the house. Apartments are just not spacious. If anyone ever really needs a home for some squeakers and can get to eastern Iowa I can always find room. There's still a now empty 11x11 room at the house. I'm there everyday and if not my mom won't object to feeding them.

Re: piggies looking for a home rabbitsncanyluv, the reasons i dont want to take them is i would have to get 3 seperate cages which i dont even think would fit in my back seat. And I've got other things I need to take in the car with me. Plus I'm gonna be on the road for 3 or 4 days by myself. Also my husband is looking for a place for us and I have no idea if it will be big enough. Right now I'm in a onebedroom apartment and i have them in my diningroom on my table. That's were they've been for the past year and I kinda miss having a table. I've thought about taking two of them with me. And finding a home for the other two. aqh888, what part of eastern iowa do you live in. I'm in Omaha Ne, If you're interested in possibly taking one or two let me know.
