Question Rescues in Iowa?

Hi everyone, I love this site to death and I'm finally delurking to ask if anyone knows of a rescue in Eastern or Southern Iowa (or anywhere in Iowa, really!). I've had guinea pigs for years and I'm currently the proud mom of Syril, a great, shy little guy who I think would love to have a friend.

I know of a few humane societies nearby, but I thought that maybe a rescue might be able to offer me a little more information about personalities and things like that. I'd love any advice about where to look! You guys are amazing. Thanks!

Re: Rescues in Iowa?

I was just looking on www.petfinder.com and saw Badger.

I hope he isn't a lethal. His eyes look odd, but hopefully may just be the picture at the shelter below. Says he needs an experienced home.

There is a list of rescues here, but I don't see any in Iowa.

Re: Rescues in Iowa?

No rescues and you won't find most small pets listed on petfinder. But please if you are in the area go to the muscatine shelter. I'll look up the exact name and address if I have to. A few weeks ago they were overrun with guinea pigs and posting pictures in all the stores. I haven't been able to stop by to check but I'm almost positive they still have some. They don't know that much about guinea pig care and it would be good to get them all rescued.

Really?! That's perfect, I'm pretty close to Muscatine. I would love some contact info if you have any. Thanks!

Thumbs up good news!

I contacted the Muscatine shelter and they have two males (and only $10, too!). Hopefully I'll be able to stop in soon and visit them (although I know it'll be horrible to have to leave one there...). I understand what you were saying about them not knowing very much about cavies, the woman advised me not to house two males together! I'll keep you all posted. Thanks again for your help!

Re: Rescues in Iowa?

yea they almost wouldn't let me have licorice because I wanted to put him with my male. I'm glad they don't have so many guinea pigs still there. There were about 6 posted in pictures and they only have a little room for small animals. It wouldn't hold 2 guinea pigs if they actually put them in bigger than a 1'x2' cage. They said they were out of room for more small pets. Chris and I were going to stop by tomorrow and if we have space we might be able to get the other male. We're in the process of measuring things out and moving the cages from my mom's house to our new apartment.

Re: Rescues in Iowa?

Oh, that's good. So sad about the small cages. Hopefully we can get them out of there!

Also I read your profile that you go to college in Iowa? Where? Seems like we have a lot in common!

Re: Rescues in Iowa?

I'm going to college at kirkwood in cedar rapids for an associate of science degree in horse training and barn management. Right now I'm living with my boyfriend in his apartment in coralville. They are redoing the road in front of the house in West Liberty so we can't hardly get there to move the rest of the squeakies or work with my horses. We've got the 3 girls here but there are the 4 boys my mom and sister are taking care of along with some orphaned kittens I found a few weeks ago.

Re: Rescues in Iowa?

I'm in Cedar Rapids and am just starting up a rescue. I have rescued 4 from people that left theirs at Petco. I have a male that needs a new home.
Also interested in meeting other piggy people here!
I have seen the one at the animal shelter. They said that he has not been handled much. I'm not sure of hte lethal. I didn't know much then and I didn't pick up the little guy. He has been there since Dec.
